Historically, computers were classified based on their processor types, as processor development and speeds were the benchmarks of development. Now, computers are classified based on their size and use: desktops for individual use at a fixed location, laptops which are portable, tablets which are handheld touchscreen devices, servers which provide network services, mainframes used by large organizations for high volume transactions, and supercomputers which are the fastest computers used for scientific research. Modern computers use microprocessors with rapidly increasing speeds and storage capacities.
