• Patna is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world.
• Recorded history of the city begins in the year 490 BCE. It has been a center
for knowledge and the arts ever since.
• The capital of Magadh kingdom (present day Bihar).
• It has produced many great leaders, including Chandragupt and Ashok.
• It is the birth place for two of the most ancient religions, Buddhism and

2. Present situation
Unfortunately the city is facing bad times today:
1. Infrastructure such as roads, public transport and waste management systems have not
grown to accommodate the exponential increase in population
2. Job creation is limited. This gives rise to unemployment and an under paid workforce.
3. Complete dependency on neighboring regions for electricity, which is generated from non-
renewable sources.
4. Patna is second most polluted city in India.

6. Summary
• Cost of making Patna self sustainable is less than the GDP of city and 15% of the GDP of
state. It would also support the neighboring areas in a 50-55 km radius.
• This will also enhance the prosperity of the city, by adding new businesses and creating
new jobs.
• The electricity generated from the solar farms would be twice the need of the city, which
can be sold to the national grid to generate further income for the city.
• Smooth traffic and a clean city (air, water and streets) will reduce the stress level of
working class and increase the productivity.
• Based on rudimentary calculations: the city will get its money back within 5 years of
implementation of these initiatives.
