Academic journals, magazines, newspapers is sometimes called periodicals—anything that comes out
with a regular issue.
Academic journals or scholarly journals: have articles about research—written by experts (scholars) in a
particular field of study. Academic journals are the real serious research stuff.

Help! i'm confused about sources and databases
- 1. What are Library Sources? Journal Articles Books Magazines Newspapers Videos Library Sources can be found on the library shelf or in library databases
- 2. What are library databases? A library database is a collection of library sources. Library databases are the holder of the sources. Many of the library sources in databases come from printed sources. (Remember the previous slide!) Example: The New York Times is a newspaper. The newspaper is a source. The articles within the newspaper have been placed in databases. A library database can have: articles from encyclopedias, magazines, and scholarly journals; and books (e- books)
- 4. Definition Break: Articles? A piece of writing included with others in newspaper, magazine, or academic journals. Example: Kim Kardashian West Files for Divorce from Kanye West, The New York Times. Which one is the source? The New York Times Which one is the article? Kim Kardashian West Files for Divorce Wait??? My instructor wants me to find 5 online sources from the library. Read the assignment thoroughly.
- 5. But Wait!.... I thought my instructor doesn’t want online sources or internet sources in my paper??!!! How do YOU use the use words online or internet? “I found my new boots online.” “I found my new boots on the internet.” “You can buy a car online.” “You can buy a car on the internet.” “You can shop for groceries online.” “You can shop for groceries on the internet.” “I met this guy online.” “I met this guy on the internet.”
- 6. Online, Internet, and Online Library Databases Isn’t the library online or on the internet? Yes I can talk an whole hour about the differences between online, internet, webpages etc. So….to wrap it up and make things a little easier…. With college writing assignments, when your instructor says find an online library source, she/he wants you to use an online library database AND NOT use: Google, Bing, Wikipedia, Yahoo. - 10. Magazines are for the general reader. Magazines typically have advertisements for popular consumer products like cars, perfume, or electronics. Magazines are consider popularly sources.
- 11. Newspapers are also for the general reader. Newspaper articles are written by journalists, but may reflect reporting, investigative reporting, or opinion. Newspaper are considered popular sources.
