Database Searching is a Lot Like Fishing Search in the right pool (of information) Pick the database(s) that contains the type of information you’re looking for (Book? Article in medical journal? Business article?) Use the right bait (search words): Think like the author: What words would the author/indexer use in the article? Use those words in a search. Think of synonyms, too.
Choosing Your Search Terms, 1,2,3 Type in a single keyword or phrase if a simple search will get you what you want: human physiology endocrine Library Catalog: Keep terms broad Databases: You can use broad or specific terms 3. To get narrower, more precise results, use: Main concept…AND…main concept endocrine AND function human physiology AND encyclopedia Why use “AND”?? Here’s why… http://opac.gcccd.edu/uhtbin/webcat http://www.grosmont.edu/library
The secret to finding information efficiently is in the way you combine keywords when searching.  From Bellevue University’s Library Tutorial
Why Use “AND”? Databases (even Google) rely on AND to give you the ability to tell the database: “Find ALL my search terms” If you can search Google, you can search our catalog and databases Search like you do in Google , except: put “AND” between your main concepts Use the Boolean to dramatically improve your searches AND
More Search Tips: Truncation and Exact Phrase Truncation is the cutting short of search term(s) in order to retrieve all items sharing a common root. For example, the truncation "librar*" would retrieve libraries, library, librarian, librarians, library science, etc. Our Databases use * Our Library Catalog uses $ Exact Phrase -- “ ” Finds items that have those particular words all together, and in the exact order you typed them

Editor's Notes

  • #2: My name and position You’ll need an index card (by your computer) Write across the top: “Something I learned today” on the front and “If I were teaching this class, I would…” on the back— you’ll be handing those to me at the end of the session. My goal in the next hour is to get you comfortable with using the Library’s Resources. You’ll have time to practice searching. Some of you may even find the articles you need. There’s one rule in here—that there’s no such thing as a dumb question. Feel free to ask during my talk and during your practice times.
