CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER NETWORKS
In classification of computer networks, there are four types of
computer networks. Let's discuss it. This four type are :
PAN: PAN stands for Personal Area Network. Thomas Zimmerman was a first
time research scientist who brought the idea of the Personal Area Network.
Upto 10 meters can be covered by PAN. PAN can include various devices like
mobile devices, tablet, desktop, and laptop.
2
LAN: LAN stands for Local Area Network. It’s a group of computers connected to
each other in a small area such as school, college, university, home, office or a
laboratory.
LAN can cover 1 Kilometer distance to 10 Kilometer distance. In LAN 5000
devices can be interconnected. All device data is stored in a single hard disk, it’s
called the server computer. LAN provides high security to their users.
3
MAN: MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network.
It can cover a entire city, college campus or a small religion. Most widely used
protocols in MAN are RS-232. Frame Relay, ATM, ISDN, OC-3, ADSL etc. MAN
use for faster communication like fiber optic cables.
4
WAN: WAN stands for Wide Area Network. The WAN network system is used as
a large network system. It can be used for an enterprise or an organization.
WAN can be used in the field of business, government or education purposes. Also,
in WAN resources are shared all over the user, so all users can access the files.
