How a solar power system
works
Step 1: Install a rooftop solar power
system
 Install a grid-synchronous solar power system in
your home/factory
 If you are a home owner, you would probably
prefer a raised solar panels structure so you
don’t lose your roof.
 You can install a similar structure if you’re a
commercial entity as well
Step 2: Synchronize it with alternate
backups
 If you have an alternate electricity back up system,
synchronize the system with your solar system to
ensure solar is given priority
 This process would done by the EPC company chosen
by you
 This would result in a considerable decrease in usage
of your alternate electricity backup
Step 3: Generate electricity on your roof
 Generate electricity on your roof that can be
used in your house
 You can cut down your highest slab (of tariff) by
cutting down consumption from the grid by using
electricity produced from your solar system
 There is no difference in the electricity produced
from your solar system when compared with grid
electricity
Step 4: Export electricity
 Most states in India (21) have the provision of net-
metering. This mechanism, allows you to feed back
excess electricity back to the grid.
 The electricity fed back to the grid is adjusted in the
bill which you will receive at the end of the month
 You are paid back at the same rate at which you buy
electricity reducing your net-bill
Step 5: Receive bill with net-metered
units
 There will be an added section in your bill
representing the net-metered units. Click here
for an analysis.
 On the right is an example BSES bill which has
the following:
 Imported units
 Exported units
 Net-difference
 Carry forward units (exported c/f to next month)
