- 2. Topic Summary • I would like to focus my capstone project on the creation of a Kindergarten Literacy Night. This night will be held at the beginning of the year, tailored to meet the needs of my classroom and the community I am teaching in. It is going to be used as a starting point for involving the parents in their child’s literacy development throughout the school year.
- 3. Statement of relevance to literacy curriculum and/or instruction: • The Kindergarten Literacy Night will be dedicated to helping parents actively support their children's education. • Monthly newsletters and enrichment/extension programs will be developed based upon the research gathered during this project and my classroom curriculum and standards. • This meeting and subsequent meetings will be a way to show parents all of the literacy rich activities and programs the school and community has to offer.
- 4. Why newsletters? • Newsletters will be focusing on important literacy skills and strategies presented in the kindergarten curriculum. They would support the literacy development in areas such as: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. They would discuss what these concepts are, why they are important, what the parents can do at home, community activities, suggested booklists, etc. • Meeting can also be held when newsletters are distributed. I can show parents specific activities to foster development in certain areas and answer any questions.

Project idea in relation to this topic with a plan for completion: I plan on researching the following areas in order to complete my capstone project: • The key areas of reading and writing development instruction to create newsletters • Importance of leveled reading and how to choose appropriate texts • Highly successful literacy night programs • Extensions/enrichment programs • Community based literacy activities and programs • Formation of a parent based support group/network

Statement regarding how this project will improve teaching, intervention practices, curriculum, or the professional community: This night will be an opportunity to create a special relationship between the teacher and the parent. It will allow me to help the parents, help their children by providing them with appropriate information and guidance to foster a literacy rich environment at home to help their children succeed in the classroom. The goals of the Kindergarten Family Literacy Night are: • Prepare kindergarten children for first grade • Enhance the home learning environment • Increase the language and literacy skills of the parent • Improve the literacy achievement of school-age students
