A SCHOOL WITH A
DIFFERENCE
Unit 12.2
1. How often are ‘parliaments’
held? How do they work?
 Weekly
 Anyone connected with the school
can attend and make a proposal, but
only teachers and students can vote.
2. What examples does Fay give
of things the parliament decides
about?
 How to spend the school budget
 Whether to hire a new teacher
 How to deal with cases of bullying
3. Why does she think the
parliament system is
successful?
 Because the students take their
responsibilities seriously and are
capable of making decisions for the
good of the school.
4. What are students encouraged
to do when they start at
Southglen? Why?
 Try a wide range of subjects, so they
can work out what they’re good at or
interested in.
5. What are students expected to
do if they’re not in class?
 Work on further projects connected
with their studies, make a practical
contribution like taking care of the
school gardens – and do their
homework.
