History of Linux Linux is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. He began his work in 1991, when he released his first version, then in ’94 the first 1.0 was released.
What is Linux? Linux, also known as GNU/Linux, is a free, UNIX-like Operating System, developed originally for home PC’s, but now runs on a variety of platforms such as PowerPC, Macintosh, Amiga, Atari, etc… Linux aims to provide maximum compatibility with other systems With millions of users worldwide, Linux is the most popular UNIX-like OS in the world.
The Linux System The central nervous system of Linux is the kernel; which is the operating system code which runs the whole computer. It is under constant development and is always available in both the LATEST stable release, and the latest experimental release. Since it is a “free-software”, thus any programmer may freely “play” with it whichever way they which and enhance the ease and down-to-earth usage of the OS.
The Linux System Amazing as it seems, the kernel of Linux is able to create a more faster and stable way of opening and creating files when compared to other OS. Simply because it stores the information and does not require them to be recalled each and every time you open or store a file. Thus creates a more faster environment to work on.
The Linux System Linux systems excel in many areas over others, ranging from concerns such as: Stability Speed Ease of use Development Networking It even can import/export files with other OS which most other OS cannot do
Stability Linux has been long praised for its stability. Famous for running months, or even years at a time without crashing, freezing, or having to be rebooted! Linux users usually make fun of other OS simply because other OS display the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death; where a Blue screen suddenly appears) Linux is Y2K compliant, storing the date in a different way from other computers. Also it is EXTREMELY secure when compared to other platforms, viruses for Linux are practically non-existent!
Speed Linux machines are also known to be extremely fast, because the operating system is very efficient at managing resources such as Memory, CPU power, and disk space. More of the Internet than you imagine is powered by Linux servers and OS’s.
Linux Abroad All across the world in many countries, Linux is used by millions of people worldwide. From China, to the US, to France and even South Africa. Linux is slowly yet steadily becoming more and more popular and someday is expected to be the #1 used OS in the world surpassing the world famous Microsoft Windows
So you want to use Linux? How old is your computer? What are you going to use it for? Can Linux do everything? Can I keep Windows? What do you mean by Linux “letting you do everything you want to do”?
How old is your computer? You may have read or heard people saying that Linux works better on old hardware. In a general sense that is true. However, “Works Well” depends on what your going to do with the machine! This brings us to our next question!
What are you going to use it for? Home Desktop? Or Office Workstation? As Home use, Linux is best used with the most advanced software and hardware components. As Workstation, Linux is used either in top of the line hardware/software, or just old ones as well.
Can Linux do everything? No Operating System in the whole world can do everything! However, Linux comes very close to being able to do everything possible. As Linux gains more and more popularity, it will be made to suit and fit every need of each individual.
Can I keep Windows? OF COURSE! As long as you have installed Windows first, Linux can be installed on any free space you have within your hard disk.
What do you mean by Linux 'letting you do everything you want to do'? Linux is capable of doing 95% of what Microsoft Windows is capable of doing as a home computer system. However, Linux is capable of doing 100% of what Microsoft Windows can do as a business desktop. The 5% that Linux lacks when compared to Windows is that of superior graphics enhancement programs (mainly used in Gaming); however, they have special Codec's that can be installed to solve this problem.
Linux Today Linux is enjoying a favorable press for the most part. This comes from the fact that Linux has proven to be tremendously stable and versatile operating system. When it is used, in companies or home, it almost never shuts down or crashes! Thus considered to be very desirable for many people throughout the world. As more and more people realize this fact, they start switching to Linux
