  • 2. PG&E  Overview • Incorporated  in  California   in  1905 • Serves  about  15  million   people  throughout  a  70,000   square-­‐mile  service  area • More  than  42,000  miles  of   gas  distribution  pipeline • 4.3  million  natural  gas   customer  accounts
  • 3. Gas  Pressure  Systems  at  PG&E Historically: • Also  known  as  Hydraulically  Independent  Systems  (HIS) • Managed  through  Synergi (Synergee)  modeling  software • Gas  Pressure  Systems  were  not  modeled  in  GIS  -­‐ why  bother   migrating?
  • 4. Business  Problem How  do  we  store  the  information  about  the  Gas  Pressure  System? • Gas  Pressure  System  information  is  loaded  into  a  table  in  GD  GIS
  • 5. Business  Problem How  do  we  define  the  boundaries  of  the  Gas  Pressure  System  on  the  map? • The  Regulator  Station  has  an   attribute  that  contains  the  Gas   Pressure  System  name • The  first  segment  of   Distribution  Main  out  of  the   Regulator  Station  is   identified  through  an   attribute
  • 6. Business  Problem How  do  we  make  sure  the  Gas  Pressure  System  is  correctly  configured? • Manually  -­‐ the  user  can   choose  to  validate  the  trace   using  the  core  tools • Background  Process
  • 7. Automated  QA/QC Automated  Checks • The  system  runs  a  process  on  a  nightly  basis  to  trace  designated  Gas  Pressure  System   Systems • If  the  trace  completes  successfully,  the  system: • Calculates  the  total  length  of  Distribution  Main • Populates  the  Gas  Pressure  System  Name  on  the  participating  Main  and  Service
  • 8. Automated  QA/QC • The  system  automatically  checks  for  the  following  conditions: • Increase  in  Gas  Pressure  System  size • Decrease  in  Gas  Pressure  System  size • No  related  Regulator  Station • If  the  trace  encounters  features  associated  with  another  Gas  Pressure  System   • The  system  will  populate  the  Review  Status  field  when  the  automated  process  is   completed
  • 9. Review  Process • The  system  sends  a  nightly  email  summarizing  any  Gas  Pressure  Systems  that  need   review
  • 10. Realized  User  Benefits • Accessibility – Allows  anyone  with  access  to  the  GD  GIS  Web  Viewer  to  see   Gas  Pressure  Systems • Increased  Awareness  – Expanded  the  ability  to  review  and  understand  of   Gas  Pressure  Systems  to  all  GD  GIS  users • Issue  Identification  – Provided  insight  into  the  current  configuration  of  Gas   Pressure  Systems  and  Identified  several  opportunities  for  improvement  in   the  current  process • Integration – The  application  is  designed  to  be  expandable,  and  should  allow   us  to  move  Cathodic  Protection,  Emergency  Zone  Management,  and  Leak   Survey  to  a  similar  model
