This document introduces the concept of communication theory and provides examples to illustrate what makes a good theory. It explains that a good theory: 1) has a clear rationale, 2) applies to several instances, 3) suggests causal relationships, 4) deals with multiple variables, and 5) has predictive value. It then provides an example theory about economic causes of war and how leaders may hide real motives from people. Good theories are supported by evidence and become more sophisticated over time by relating to more conditions and variables.
