The respiratory system allows for oxygen to enter the blood and carbon dioxide to exit the blood through breathing. The organs involved include the nose, mouth, throat, windpipe, bronchi, and lungs. In the lungs, oxygen passes from tiny air sacs called alveoli into the blood in capillaries, while carbon dioxide passes from the blood into the alveoli. Breathing is powered by the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm and ribcage muscles, pulling air into and pushing air out of the lungs with each breath.
