Graphs and analysis of questions
Introduction
For my questionnaire, I added many questions that would tell me what type of music
magazine people would like. I gave out 15 of my questionnaires to be filled in and got 14
back.
In my questionnaire I added open and closed questions, meaning the data I collected
was both quantitative and qualitative. The closed questions gave me direct answers to
questions I wanted to ask to help me decide who my target audience should be (i.e.
male or female). This type of data could easily be turned into graphs and pie charts, and
could also clearly narrow down the target audience.
The qualitative questions (i.e. What do you do in your free time?) allowed me to collect
more in depth answers about the individuals who filled out my questionnaire. These are
more detailed answers with no options to choose from, so participants would have to
write down their own answers. This type of data is harder to turn into graphs, so I looked
for answers that came up the most often to help me create a graph or chart so that the
answers I received can easily be seen.

Numberofpeople
I can see from my questionnaire that most of my target audience would be at
the lower end of 16-18. Therefore, when creating a target audience profile, I
will take this into consideration. I asked this question so I could see how old
the majority of my target audience would be. However, this may not be very
accurate as I gave my questionnaires out at a time when the majority of the
older students were in lesson.

Gender
I asked this question to see what gender the majority of my target audience would
be. I think this particular part of my questionnaire did not go very well as I just
gave most of my questionnaires out to females. I think that this is also the
opposite to what I actually would expect from my genre of music.

ethnicity
This part of my questionnaire also did not go very well. This was because I gave
my questionnaires to a group of friends that were together, and they were mostly
of the same ethnic background. Therefore, I don't think that this is actually very
representative of my music genre. It also goes against what I have found from my
research – I would have expected more people of black ethnicities to like my
genre of music.

Genre
I think that this part of my questionnaire showed me what type of genre my
magazine should be as most people said that their favourite genre would be hip
hop, although some people did say they preferred pop music. One thing that
didn't go very well with this part of my questionnaire was that I think people just
ticked anything and didn't really think about the question.

Do you read magazines?
Number of people
This question gave me a very basic response which is exactly what I was after, and
it allowed me to see how many people actually read magazines. I found that a lot
of them did not read magazines. I think that the people I asked in general were
not very representative of the entire population, but I got both types of
responses.

3 favourite artists
Artists
Although some other artists were mentioned, these were the more frequently
mentioned ones. The main 2 favoured artists were those who are part of the hip
hop industry, so this tells me that the type of music they do, and perhaps the
lyrics they use could be something that attracts fans of this genre.
However, we can see that artists from other genres were mentioned, and this
perhaps tells us that people did not think a lot about what they chose as their
favourite genres.
What would you associate with this
genre?
violence
money
sex
females
flowers
happiness
Again, these were the most frequently mentioned things although there were some
other things. We can see from the pie chart that the majority of the people said that
money was something that was related to rap music. This can be useful when
coming up with a masthead, or when trying to see what the articles should be
about.

How much would you spend on a
magazine?
There was a variety of answers here as a lot of people had different thoughts about
how much the magazine should cost. However, we can see from the graph that most of
the people thought that about £1-£2 would be the right price. This tells us that
although rap music does frequently mention money in its lyrics, the fans of the genre
don’t want to spend too much money. This can help me create a profile for the target
audience.
What do you like to read about?
album reviews
artists
merchendise
gossip
interviews
celebrities
There was a variety of things that people said they would like to read about. I asked
this question so I could decide what the article on my double page spread would be
about, but this can also help me create my contents page.

Do you go to concerts/gigs?
Again, this question tells us a lot about the type of people that listen to rap and hip
hop music. We can see that some of the people are quite outgoing, so this could
again help me decide what articles and images should be included in my magazine.
What colours would you associate
with hip hop?
black
blue
white
red
yellow
pink
I asked this question so that it could help me create a colour scheme for mu
magazine. The main 2 colours that people said they would associate with Hip
Hop was white and red. This information could help me decide what colour my
masthead would be, the colour of the clothes of the model, and the colour of
the fonts for the cover lines, contents and the main article.
What do you do in your free time?
relax
listen to music
watch films
These were the 3 main things that people answered. We can see that it is more or
less spread evenly between them, but the majority of the people who answered my
questionnaire said that they would listen to music when they have free time. This
can help me decide what some articles or cove lines should be – if the target
audience enjoy listening to music then the magazine can include short playlists of
songs etc...
What do you want to see in a music
magazine?
new songs
interviews
photoshoots
reviews
This question is very useful in helping me create the double page spread as I can make
it be about what most people in the target audience find interesting. I found that a lot
of people wanted to read about and see new releases, and that some people also said
they would enjoy reading interviews with artists.
