This document summarizes a study that explored the effects of pedestrian countdown signals on driver behavior. Researchers observed driver actions at two similar intersections, one with countdown signals and one without. They found that at the intersection with countdown signals, drivers were less likely to enter the intersection late in the amber phase and fewer vehicles were present between the amber and red phases. Additionally, more vehicles stopped near the intersection with traditional signals, possibly due to sudden braking. The study suggests countdown signals allow drivers to make safer decisions about stopping or crossing by providing more information.
