COURSE DESCRIPTION : This is the first course in Machine Tool Technology. Fundamentals of Machine Tools provides the basic principles needed for a solid foundation in machine tool technology. Areas and machines covered include: safety, measurement, layout work, bench work, saws, drills, grinding, the lathe and milling machines.

OBJECTIVES : The student will learn and explore the many procedures involved in the operation of basic machine tools and at the end of the semester, the student will be able to: 1. Identify and be aware of general shop safety rules and guidelines. 2. Identify and properly use machinists’ precision measurement gages and equipment. 3. Identify and properly use various layout tools as well as follow layout procedures. 4. Identify and properly use various machinists’ hand tools.

5. Identify and properly use various saws and cutting equipment used in the modern machine shop. 6. Identify and properly use various drill presses and drilling machines. 7. Identify and properly use various grinders and grinding equipment to sharpen drills, lathe cutting tools, as well as other tools found in the machine shop. 8. Identify the various parts of the lathe and perform simple machining operations such as turning, threading, knurling, parting and others. 9. Identify the various parts of the milling machine and perform simple machining operations such as milling flat surfaces, grooving, steps and angles.

CLASSROOM POLICIES/PROCEDURES : It is the primary goal of the Machine Tool Technology Program and instructors to assure your success in the program and your employment upon graduation. A key factor in your success is the attendance of all lectures and labs. To assist you in achieving your objectives the Machine Tool Technology Program has obtained an electronic time clock which is used to track your attendance in all of your Machine Tool classes. This information will become a permanent part of your student folder and assist the instructors in recommending specific students for employment in the Machine Tool Technology field.

Students will receive a Daily grade composed from such things as safety habits, work ethics, motivation and attitude, as well as grades from in-class activities such as quizzes and worksheets. The shop will be cleaned after each use and all students are required to assist in the cleanup. The last day of class is major shop clean up day and attendance is mandatory, any student that fails to show up on major shop cleanup day will have 5 points deducted from their final grade.

Due to the fact that there will be quizzes, group discussions, and hands-on exercises during class; absences, being tardy and leaving class early should be kept to a minimum. After 4 occasions of missing any part of a class, a student will lose 5 points per absence from their final grade. Any adjustments to this policy will be at the instructor’s discretion and only when legitimate documentation is provided for all absences.

If it is necessary to miss class, the responsibility belongs to the student to find out what was covered and be ready to participate in class when they return. There will be no makeup lectures or quizzes. Makeup tests will be scheduled at non-class times. Failure to take a make-up test on the day scheduled will result in a grade of “0” for that test.

Should you desire to withdraw from the class, you must fill out the required form, obtain the instructor’s signature, and submit the form to Student Services by the appropriate date listed on the Institution’s calendar. Field trips will be taken during the course of the semester to area manufacturing firms and machine shops and your participation is required. Work that is turned in after the time and date due will be penalized 25% per day.

Computer Lab: If you need access to a computer outside of class there are two locations that have several computers available. Location One: AT Building Room 155: Hours are Monday – Thursday 8 am to 9 pm. Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Saturday 10 am to 2:00 pm. Closed Sunday. Location Two: ECTC Library: Hours are Monday – Friday 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Saturday 8:00 to 12:00.

GRADING SCALE/POLICY : Projects will be graded using part blueprint and measurement sheet found in the student notebook. To makeup quizzes and/or tests, the student will need to see the instructor as soon as possible when they return to class Projects = 55% Mid-Term Exam = 10% Final Exam = 10% Quizzes = 10% Daily Grade = 15% Safety, clean-up, on-task, on-time, performance 50 points possible each day – 3200 points possible per semester

Grade Scale: 90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D (This is a failing grade for Machine Tool Tech courses) Below 60% = E (Failing Grade)

Uniform Policy The Machine Tool Technology program at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College have a mandatory uniform policy. Students are required to adhere to the policy at all times unless otherwise directed by the instructor. The policy is as follows: Shirts – (2) Uniform shirts are required. Shirts must be tucked in and buttoned (with the exception of the top two) at all times. If the student has a uniform from their place of employment they may wear it.

Pants – Pants are to be worn around the waist, no holes and no shorts. Shoes – Leather work shoes or boots with slip resistant soles are required. If shoes/ boots have strings they must be tied. Hats – May be worn but must be kept clean. Hair – Long hair must be tied back. Jewelry – Rings, chains, bracelets, facial jewelry, watches, earrings or any other items deemed a safety hazard by the instructor are not permitted. (NO EXCEPTIONS) Safety Glasses – Students must supply their own eye protection and have it available each day. Safety glasses must be worn while in the lab! Improper dress will result in loss of daily points and restriction from working in the lab.

Career Opportunities in Machining and Related Areas Like all technology, machining manufacturing has become a very specialized business and this trend is likely to continue Trade level opportunities available: Machine operator Responsibilities include operating CNC machine tools such as turning and machining centers Limited setup, inspection and machine adjustment responsibilities Setup person Responsibilities include setting up machine tools and assisting the operator in obtaining an acceptable first piece at the start of a run

General machinist Responsibilities include setting up and operating all of the common conventional machine tools Automotive machinist Responsibilities include many similar to the general machinist yet he or she will work in an engine rebuilding shop where engines are overhauled or modified They will specialize in engine work which includes boring, milling, and some grinding applications Maintenance machinist The maintenance machinist has a broad range of responsibilities such as equipment maintenance, machine tool rebuilding, general machine repairs including welding, electrical, hydraulics and pneumatics

Tool and die makers Highly skilled workers in the manufacturing industry who make jigs, fixtures, dies, molds, machine tools, cutting tools (such as milling cutters and form tools), gages, and other tools used in manufacturing processes. Depending on which area of concentration a particular person works in, he or she may be called by variations on the name, including tool maker, die maker, mold maker, tool fitter, etc. Die makers Skilled craftspeople who typically learn their trade through a combination of academic course-work, hands-on instruction and a substantial apprentice period.

Inspector (Quality control) Responsibilities include the dimensional measurement quality control functions using conventional measuring devices as well as high tech computerized measuring equipment Production technician Responsibilities include installation of production machining equipment with a knowledge of electrical/electronic and/or mechanical operations Skills needed include pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical/electronics systems, computers and mechanical devices

Marine machinist Responsibilities include duties in the shipbuilding industry such as testing, repairing installation of all types of shipboard mechanical systems Apprentice machinist The apprentice learns the trade by entering a formal training program sponsored by private industrial, trade union or government entities Typically a four year program with a combination of on-the- job experience as well as formal classroom education Helpers and limited machinists Responsibilities include assisting the journeyperson by providing general help
