“Single-stream recycling makes it almost as easy to use the recycling bin as
it is to use the trash can”
Melissa Mullaney, Devyn Blume, Mike Trowbridge,
Theresa Silva, Abdul Stewart
Introduction
As a group of five individual Umass
Dartmouth business students, we came
together and molded into a team dedicated
to working with the New Bedford
community to improve their single stream
recycling habits. We have completed a series
of slides to showcase how we worked with
the community to further inform them
about single stream recycling and how our
event with the Williams H. Taylor
Elementary School will impact the amount
of material New Bedford will recycle in the
future.

Mission Statement
We are a of team of University of Massachusetts business students
dedicated to informing the New Bedford Williams H. Taylor
Elementary school on the new policies regarding single stream
recycling. We strive for the impression and information we leave on the
students to be carried with them into their lives and these new recycling
habits to be spread throughout the community as well as well as their
homes.
Goals
1. To educate William H. Taylor Elementary School on single stream recycling policies and have the
whole school dedicated to this practice by the end of November.
2. To have a planned event on a set day that teaches the school these new policies.
- Make them aware of not only what to recycle but also what not to recycle
3. Leave a lasting impression with the students by creating a brochure and competition at the event
that will be share throughout their community.
- Show what will happen if they decide to recycle or what will happen if you don't recycle
- Explain how to recycle
4. Provide only accurate information to school we are working with and at the ARD event
ARD Event 1
We cut out the letters of “ SINGLE STREAM” in recycled cardboard and
challenged each class to not only fill in a letter with recycled materials, but
also to recycle the most.
Gave each class a cardboard thermometer to measure their recycling
The winning class gets to hold up the letters and get their picture taken for
the newspaper
LET THE
RECYCLING BEGIN!
ARD Event 2
After 2 weeks from
our first meeting
date, we returned
back to the school
along with the
photographer to take
a picture of the
winning class with
their letters.

How We Accomplished Our Goals...
Goal 1
➔ Introduced a fun/informative project which
allowed them to practice these new recycling
procedures
➔ Went back to the school at the end of
November to check the progress: the recycling
bins were extremely full with all the correct
materials in one rather than separating
Goal 2
➔ Set up a successful informative event on Oct. 31
➔ Played a game at first event to demonstrate
what they can and cannot recycle
➔ Gave each class a cardboard thermometer to
measure their recycling
➔ Checked their progress on Nov. 13 and
established the winning class
Goal 3
➔ successfully printed out
brochures for the
students to bring home
to their families to
inform the community
about this new practice
Goal 4
➔ Discussed our
information with Marissa
➔ Had her look over our
brochure
Results
Brochure
Standard times -- roughly 30,000 people
New Bedford Guide - Total reach for our article was
10,000 people and clicks on website are a estimated 300
hundred
Obstacles
● Schools not responding at beginning
● Communication in group text (wrong number)
● Making our schedule accommodate with the school
● Finding a photographer
● Getting materials (brochures, cardboard)
Plan For Improvement
Have written “homework” assignments for
each member
Spend some time discussing personal
stories (outside of the project)
Make an agreement to hold each other
accountable by email reminders
Everyone will be aware of exactly what
they need to do for next time
We will gain trust in each other from
learning about group members outside of
the project
Emails will make it so there is no excuse
for any individual work to not get done
Meet Project Criteria
Service to Community Partner
● Went into a school that Marissa
helped us find to talk about single
stream recycling
● Put her name and contact info in
the newspaper articles so people
can get more information
ARD Events
● First day at the school we informed
them about single stream and
presented their challenge
● Second day at the school we got the
results and a picture taken for the
New Bedford Guide and the Standard
times.
Community Involvement
● Principal of the William H.
Taylor Elementary School
● New Bedford photographer
New Bedford Guide
● Standard Times
● Dining Services donated
recycled cardboard
Sustainability
● Used all recyclable materials
● Teachers are educated on what can
and cannot be recycled
● Teachers agreed to commit to these
policies
● Principal stated that they have
recycled more than ever and that the
kids seem enthusiastic for the future
Recycling Awareness,
Behavior, and Education
● 250 brochures
● Survey sent out to the school
