Analyze the Learners
This lesson is for first grade students in a class for special education students. There are 10 boys and 7
girls. Seven of the students present have mild to severe ADHD. The majority of the students are white,
while some are Hispanic and African-American.
Entry Competencies
The students have a reading level anywhere from kindergarten to first grade. Some, as they are a
special education class, may not have an exceptional ability to read.

State Objectives
My first grade students will verbally list and describe the months of the year in sequential order by
writing (while saying the months) in the blank spaces on a chart divided into four different sections that
represent the four seasons. The students will complete this task in two weeks with 100% accuracy.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials
The method I chose was instruction as a full class, but smaller groups for practice. I will introduce the
lesson by using pictures displayed on a chalk board of specific weather types with the months in which
they occur written underneath. The chalkboard and chalk are available within the classroom. The
pictures, of such things as snow, the sun, falling leaves, and rain, will help the students identify with the
weather being depicted.
The materials needed include four personal dry erase boards and markers, which are easily found
within the classroom, and the chalkboard within the classroom for my use.

Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the Materials
I will look at each of the dry erase boards to ensure that they are clean and ready for use. The
chalkboard will also be cleared of any unnecessary depictions.
Prepare the Materials
On each dry erase board and my chalkboard, I will have drawn 12 rectangles separated into four
different sections. Beneath each of the four sections, I will draw the pictures from the chalkboard
depicting the weather from each season, and the season's name beneath that. Beside my chart on the
chalkboard, I will write all 12 months in a mixed order for them to use as a word bank.
Prepare the Environment
The classroom will be set up for small teamwork so that the students may work together to fill in their
blank charts. Each group of desks (four groups in total) will have one dry erase board and 4 different
colored markers.

To prepare my students, I will address to them how important the months of the year are, relating them
back to holidays, seasons, and weather. They will have already saw the correct order in which the
months are to be arranged.

Require Learner Participation
Large-Group Activities
At the beginning of class, using the drawings and text on the chalkboard, I will ask the students how
they feel about each of the weather types depicted. They will each be allowed to give a description of
their feelings before moving on. I will then ask if they can think of a specific time when they have
experienced these types of weather, whether it be during the school year, summer break, etc. Together,
the students and I will work together to relate the weather to each month that it occurs, making sure that
they understand each season lasts for around three months.
Small Group Activities
After the group discussion, I will divide the students into teams of four, with one team of five because
of the uneven number of students. The answers on the board will then be erased, and the months of the
year will be written in a mixed order. Together in each group, the students will work to figure out how
to read and say each month. Special attention is to be paid to the month that we are currently in so that
the students may relate the month to others as a group. The students will the work together to place the
months with the correct weather, but not specifically in the right order. This process will be repeated,
eventually easing the children into putting the months in the correct order.

Evaluate and Revise
Assessment of Learner Achievement
Within their groups, the students will present their final finished boards to the class, explaining to the
rest of the class how they deducted their answers.
Evaluation of Media and Methods
After the lesson takes place, I will ask the students how they enjoyed using the dry erase boards as their
method of organizing their thoughts.
