Using Feeds to Stay Up-to-Date Adapted from a presentation by Jane Tatlow as part of the NLH Search 2.0 Representatives Group. Kieran Lamb Head of Library Service, Fade Library, Liverpool PCT Prepared with: Lisa Anderson Business Intelligence Service Project Manager, McArdle Library, Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust From the original work developed by: Michelle Maden Clinical Information Specialist, Edge Hill University In collaboration with: Katie Barnes Director APNP Programmes, Liverpool John Moores University
What are Feeds? RSS (feed) is a tool to save you time having to visit websites to see if they’ve been updated It’s important because journals and databases create feeds so we can use it to keep u-to-date easily How can I tell of a site has a feed: All you need to read a feed is provided by NLH (but there are other services like google reader out there too!) The important bit of the feed is its web address syndicate
Go to the NLH Homepage www.library.nhs.uk and log in with your NHS Athens username.
There are over 1000 online journals available to NHS staff which have been purchased by NHS England. Local health library services have added to this total. This includes many top titles such as JAMA and British Medical Journal. Your NHS Athens username and password is the key to accessing these journals and articles. Direct access to a searchable index is available via My Journals, http://journals.library.nhs.uk or from the link on the NLH homepage
Once you have logged on with your Athens username, select My Library. This will always appear on the top tool bar of NLH.
MY UPDATE Click on add feed to create a new item in MY UPDATE Latest 4 items of feed with time updated. Click on list all to see all available feed items.
Adding a Feed First find your feed (in this case I’ve used Ebsco CINAHL Full Text). Click on the RSS feed icon and copy the feeds address in this case Pediatric Nursing into the Feed URL box and give the feed a name http:// rss . ebscohost .com/ AlertSyndicationService /Syndication. asmx / GetFeed ? guid =1379494 Click on continue to my library and the feed is added
Feed in MY UPDATE New feed in my update – staying up-to-date now takes minutes!
