 Cambridge Placement Test (CPT)
 The Oxford Online Placement Test
 TOEFL
 IELTS
Cambridge Placement Test (CPT)
 An international test of general English language ability,
focusing on the skills of Reading, Use of English and
Listening.
 CPT is used to find out:
- what level of English ability students have
- which classes and courses are most suitable for students
- which Cambridge English exam students should aim for.
 It is designed to pinpoint students’ level of English.
 It is related to the Common European Framework of
Reference for Languages (CEFR) – the standard
benchmark used internationally to describe language
ability.
 It assesses the entire spectrum of learning ability, from pre-
A1 level to Level C2.
 A student’s score is based on a scale of 1–100 and tells
you their appropriate CEFR level and the Cambridge
English exams available at their level.
The Oxford Online Placement Test
 To test British or American English.
 To place students into the appropriate level class for a
language course.
 Used as a quick measure of a student's general language
ability.
 The test has two sections:
Use of English and Listening. It gives both an overall score
and individual scores for each section.
 Not only does it test grammar and vocabulary, it also tests
how learners use that knowledge in order to understand the
meaning in communication.

MUET
 Malaysian University English Test
 A main examination conducted to ascertain students’ level
of proficiency before they are offered a place by a local
institution of higher learning.
Cambridge Placement Test (CPT)
 A yardstick to measure a teacher's English Language
competence.
 All English optionists in Malaysia have to sit for this test.
 The test is conducted online and will test on
comprehension, listening and grammatical competence.
 The time allocated for the test is 30 minutes.

English Placement Tests (UPM)
 All postgraduate students in UPM are required to have a
minimum English qualification.
 The accepted forms of qualifications are:
- IELTS - Band 6
- TOEFL - Paper Based Test 550; Computer Based Test 21,
Internet Based Test 80
- If do not pass the TOEFL, IELTS or UPM placement test,
do a compulsory English for Graduate Studies course.

 Language placement testing benefits students by:
- allowing students to continue studying a language at an
appropriate level
- assisting students in completing the language
requirement of the core curriculum in a timely manner
- enabling a better learning environment for all students by
grouping students with similar proficiency levels together
