Illegal File Sharing ACM1010 Introduction to Web Technologies Assignment 1 – Presentation Agnes, Rosie & Geoff
What is File Sharing? Generally, it is the process of sharing of files over the internet through a decentralised or Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network, but it can also be achieved via intranets, portable media devices, or even hyperlinked material on the World Wide Web.’ This is not a definitive list of how files can be shared, but it includes some of the most commonly used processes. When people think of file sharing, they tend to think first about free music and movie downloads from the internet, and high profile peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, as these have received the most coverage in the media in recent years.
Examples of Popular File Sharing Sites and Networks
What is legal/illegal file sharing? Illegal file sharing is where a copyrighted material is distributed or downloaded without the permission of its’ owner, or without paying for it. It could be music, a movie, games, artwork, or any other published work. Legal file sharing can be seen as sharing any non-copyrighted material, or material which has been authorised for distribution by the copyright owner. So the key points here that differentiate legal and illegal file sharing are copyright and permission.
So How Does This Technology Work?
Model 1 - One to Many The oldest and most common example of file sharing is the WWW itself. Using a client/server model, many users or visitors are delivered content from a central server. Examples: Web pages, YouTube, Flickr.
Model 2 - Peer to Peer (P2P) In this decentralised peer to peer model, individual computers can send and receive files directly to each other without the need for a centralised server. Examples: Lime Wire, Kazaa.
Model 3 - BitTorrent A newer decentralised approach where every computer in the network can send and receive parts of files from multiple others. This is faster and puts less demands on the ‘host’ or ‘peer’. It creates a true sharing network. Examples: BitTorrent, The Pirate Bay, Torrent Spy
How is it used/misused? A recent article in The Australian regarding research from a Victorian university has found the following breakdown on popular file sharing resource BitTorrent: Almost 90% of files available are illegal and/or infringe copyright; including music, movies, games & software. 8.2% of files shared were classed as rudey-nudey stuff. Only the remaining 1.9% of files were legitimate files. So it seems we have chosen to use the power of the internet for evil rather than good, at least when it comes to file sharing.
What impact does it have? Financial: According to a recent article from BBC News, at current growth trends, illegal file sharing is predicted to cost almost AU$350 Billion, and up to 1.2 million jobs globally by 2015. Social: We have global sharing on a scale not seen before, but conversely we are also experiencing an exponential increase in global copyright infringement. We now have a generation of people, of which a considerable % are comfortable breaking the law, and see illegal file sharing as legitimate and acceptable.
ILLEGAL FILE SHARING How does illegal File sharing affect the entertainment industry? What are the positive and negative aspects of file sharing in regard to the entertainment industry What are the policies and regulations regarding file sharing?
What is file sharing? How File sharing first came about Definition of file sharing Examples of file sharing -computer programs -multi-media -documents -electronic books Technology that assists in file sharing
How file sharing relates to the entertainment industry Importance of file sharing and what it means to society How file sharing relates to the entertainment industry First example of file sharing in the entertainment industry
Positive affects of file sharing in the entertainment industry article on the internet “file sharing has no impact of CD sales ,says research.” Other factors that have caused decline in revenue in the entertainment industry “ File sharing not so evil” New artists discovered on the internet

Illegal File Sharing How illegal file sharing affects the education industries Advantages and disadvantages of file sharing
What is File Sharing? My definition:- using the computer to download programs from the internet Other findings :- The Oxford dictionary : the practice of or ability to transmit files from one computer to another over a network or the Internet Wiki : File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digitally stored information, such as computer programs, multi-media (audio, video), documents, or electronic books. It may be implemented in a variety of storage, transmission, and distribution models New Jersey City University : Provisions in the networking system software that allow more than one user to access the same file
Illegal file sharing What is Illegal file sharing? copy or download any information that you do not have permission to reproduce any printed or audio information without prior permission from the owner is illegal The effect uncontrolled reproduction and distribution can impact publishers revenue students may freely distribute scholarly works that deserve financial rewards students may be able to reproduce the work in their assessments that may not demonstrate their knowledge
File Sharing Is file sharing relevant to the education environment? YES
Education How is it relevant? Brought into classrooms as a major learning tool
Education How is it relevant? A ‘big library’ rich with resources for both teachers and students
Education How is it relevant? Educational games for students
Education How is it relevant? Useful information for teachers
Education How is it relevant? Apart from using white boards and books, computers brings in a different dimension to a child’s learning
File Sharing Advantages… Supports students learning teachers upload free online sites for students to work on allows teachers to monitor student’s achievements addresses numeracy, literacy, science and other academic areas
File Sharing cont.. Advantages Students manage their own work load Working at their own phase Ability to decide whether they can manage the next challenging level
File Sharing cont.. Advantages Environmental issues Teachers need not print out hard copies of work sheet for students Students log into these sites using their own dedicated log in ID Work can be stored in an external hard drive for future references There are sites available where teachers are able to upload files and share them with other educators
File Sharing cont.. Advantages Safety and assurance Students upload their assignments to lectures ensuring receipt Students and lecturers are able to transmit files electronically e.g. lecture notes, e readings providing students the opportunity to use these resources whenever possible from their location
File Sharing Disadvantages… Vulnerable to computer bugs By clicking the Download button, its an open invitation to all the Trojans Horses, email viruses and worms
File Sharing cont..disadvantages According to David E. Sorkin, The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, llinois, the creator of Spam Laws A Trojan horse appears to be nothing more than an interesting computer program creates a “saxophone.wav file” on the computer of user who’s interested in collecting sound samples. once on your computer doesn’t reproduce but instead makes your computer susceptible to malicious intruders by allowing them to access and read your files. extremely dangerous to your computer’s security and your personal privacy A Worm is a virus program that copies and multiplies itself by using computer networks and security flaws. once multiplied, the copied worms scan the network for further loopholes and flaws in the network. A classic example of a worm is the ILOVEYOU virus
File Sharing cont..disadvantages Answers not listed In a self directed learning environment the student uses a particular software to accomplish a task there would be a list of ‘approved’ answers to that particular task If an answer which is not in the ‘approved list’, that task would be marked wrong Jeremy Fox, University of East Anglia, England states that there are programs that allows teachers to specify several ‘correct responses’ but it is impossible to anticipate all responses.
File Sharing cont..disadvantages Teachers knowing students facilitate learning understand their students be aware of the standard of achievement that the student is at challenge students based on their current capabilities
