Pattern is a universal language in art that is created through repetition which establishes rhythm. Pattern can take many forms with varying rhythms that can be fast or slow, simple or complex. Many artists throughout history have incorporated pattern into their works, from ancient Egyptian tomb paintings to modern abstract pieces that utilize juxtaposed images and mixed media. Pattern is seen as both decorative and conceptual in conveying meaning through intricate designs.

- 15. Édouard Vuillard (French, 1868-1940) Vuillard lived with his mother, a dressmaker, until the age of sixty, and was very familiar with pattern. Much of his art is decorative with intricate patterns marked by a gentle humor and executed in a delicate, soft color.
