Mitosis is the process of cell division that results in two daughter cells with identical genetic material to the original parent cell. It consists of five phases: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase/cytokinesis. During interphase, the cell prepares for division by doubling its genetic material. In prophase, chromosomes condense and begin pairing up. Metaphase sees the chromosomes line up in the center. Anaphase separates the paired chromosomes to opposite sides. Finally, in telophase the nuclear membrane reforms and cytokinesis splits the cell into two.
