       EFFECT OF SCENARIO ENVIRONMENT ON THE
   PERFORMANCE OF MANETs ROUTING PROTOCOL:
                                          AODV

ABSTRACT
        A Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) is a self-configuring and infrastructure less
network of mobile nodes connected by wireless links. The nodes are randomly changing
their Position and so, performance is suffered. In this paper we discuss about the effect of
scenario on the performance of Reactive /On-Demand Routing Protocols AODV (Ad-
Hoc On-Demand Routing) we have taken three different scenario parameter for AODV
and examine the result on the basis of packet delivery ratio (PTR), throughput and end-
to-end delay. The result shows that AODV is best for one scenario environment. Thus
scenario also affects the result of any protocols.

I. INTRODUCTION
A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is self-configuring and infrastructure less network. It
consists of a collection of wireless mobile nodes that are capable to communicate with

one to another [1][2][3][4]. The objective of this paper is to examine the effect of
different scenarios environment on the performance of routing mechanisms like average
end-to-end delay, routing overhead, throughput, and packet delivery ratio specifically for
MANETs. In MANETs routing protocols are broadly classified as Reactive and
Proactive. It is aimed to evaluate the effects of scenario on the performance of on-
demand reactive protocol AODV (Ad hoc On-demand Distance vector) on the simulation
basis. This simulation is done by using widely recognized and improved network
simulator NS-2 version 2.29.3 for MANETs, with appropriate modification on NS-2 files
and TCL scripts for fair performance evaluation [5].
II. METHODOLOGY
        On the bases of previous studies [5][6][7] we saw that the performance of routing
protocols are Affected by scenario parameter like scenario size, pause time and so on. In
these paper we have discussed, the effect of scenario parameter on the performance of
MANETs reactive routing protocol AODV.
        The evaluation of performance of MANETs routing Protocol AODV are based on
different Scenarios such as network Size, Pause Time, Max Speed. The following are the
metrics which we have used for the performance analysis
a. Packet Delivery Fraction (PDF)
        This is the ratio of total number of packets successfully received by the
destination nodes to the number of packets sent by the source nodes throughout the
simulation. A high value of PDF [2][3][6][7].
b. Throughput (bps)
        Throughput represents the total number of bits forwarded to higher layers per
second. A high value of PDF indicates that most of the packets are being delivered to the
higher layers and is a good indicator of the protocol performance [5].
c. End to End delay
        This is defined as the average delay in transmission of a packet between two
nodes. A higher value of end-to-end delay means that the network is congested and hence
the routing protocol doesn’t perform well [ 3][6][7].

III. EXPERIMENTAL RESULT

       III(a). In these cases we have seen that the performace of AODV is better for
250*250m network size because the PDF and throughput are high but delay was less as
compaire to other two.and 500*500m and 1000*1000m are giving approximate same
PDF and Delay but throughput was very poor in 500*500m. So we can say that
performance of AODV according to network size 250*250m was best and in 500*500m
network size performance was poor.

Figure 2 Present the comparison table and graph of different Max Speed on the bases of
                         PDF, throughput, End To End Delay
      III(b). When Max speed is 10m/s and 15m/s AODV give the good PDF but
throughput is less and delay was high. but in 20m/s max speed give a good PDF and
Throughput but delay was very high than other two.

          III(c). In the case of different Pause time the PDF for 4ms,8ms and 15ms are
approximatly same but throughtput for 4ms and 15ms are also approximatly same but for
8ms it is much better than other, also the delay is very high for that but aproximatlly same
for 4ms and 15 ms.
IV. CONCLUSION
          The combination of parameters are very important to increase the performance
because all factor had affected the result and performance. Performance of AODV
depended on the numbers of nodes but also on the scenario parameters like, when the
network size is 250*250, pause time is 1ms and Max speed is 8m/s AODV is give better
results as compare to other scenario environment.
