would have saved them time in traffic, and some may have tweaked a familiar route to test the notion. A free
navigation app for smart phones called Waze performs such experiments at a grand scale by treating its users as
road-going data probes
Waze users automatically broadcast their GPS position and speed to Waze over the Web at all times. Social-
networking and gaming features built into the app also encourage them to actively share information such as the
location of hazards and traffic jams. When a user asks the app for directions, those sources of information
influence Waze’s routing algorithm. Users can see the position and speed of other users on a map, and also
receive live hazard reports. The data collected by the app is used to refine Waze’s map in other ways, showing, for
example, the location of unmapped streets.

Waze awards points to drivers for miles driven with the app running, and also for submitting hazard
reports. Making a report while driving, to indicate problems such as traffic jams, speed traps, or
accidents, requires just three taps on the phone. Users can also create and join groups to follow
reports from people who drive a particular route or area, or compete with friends to rack up the most
points.
Those points do more than just make users feel good, says Di-Ann Eisnor, vice president and
community geographer at Waze. “We use it as a confidence score for the contributions that user
makes,” says Eisnor. A report of a traffic jam from a low-ranked user is less likely to change the route
suggested by Waze than one from a high-ranked user, for example.

“Unlike other apps, Waze is used a lot even when people don’t need to be told when to go, like for commuting,”
Eisnor says. About 70 percent of trips made with Waze do not involve asking it for directions. Instead people leave it
running on their phone to see real time traffic data, receive warnings of hazards reported by others and contribute
themselves to the community.

The southwest-Florida TV station NBC-2 has created a Waze group for local commuters, and it now bases its
reports exclusively on information and maps drawn from that community and other Waze users in the area. “They
found that information from Waze was as good—and even better than—the paid-for traffic data they used before,”
says Eisnor.
To encourage users to probe conditions in uncharted areas and thus extend Waze’s coverage, the company
employs a game-like feature: icons dubbed “road goodies” placed on the map. Users earn points for driving over
the virtual goodies, and often diverge from their route to do so, says Eisnor.
Mikel Maron, a developer and member of the board of Open Street Map, a collaborative project working to build a
free, editable online map of the globe, says he can understand why users might be willing to change their route to
gather data that helps others. Some of the data collected by Open Street Map is used by Microsoft’s Bing Maps
service.
“I know that once people start mapping in Open Street Map, it becomes a kind of addiction. You really want to
help fill in the white spaces,” says Maron. “I imagine that is perhaps how someone would feel about helping
others by improving Waze’s coverage.” However, he says some people may reconsider when it becomes clear
that Waze seeks to make money using their data.

One revenue strategy under development at the company involves placing virtual coupons or discounts on the road
for collection. “We’re currently experimenting to see what influences behavior and find out what incentives work,”
says Eisnor. “We’ve been surprised by what the threshold is.” Waze’s advertising platform launched in Israel two
months ago. A recent trial in San Francisco awarded free concert tickets to the user who drove over the most
promotional goodies.
Eisnor says that saving money can coexist alongside more altruistic motivations like helping to cut travel
frustrations. “In time, I want to answer the question of whether we can reduce congestion based on coupons at
Starbucks,” she says.
Bayer says he thinks that advertising and fixing traffic jams could go together. “I think it would be possible in future
to use personalized incentives to try and decongest freeways by altering drivers’ routes,” says Bayer, “the driver
and promoter might get something out of it but there can also be a public good.”

Microsoft Taps AI to Outsmart Traffic
Microsoft on Thursday unveiled a predictive traffic system that combines historical traffic data with
real-time updates from GPS-enabled devices in order to build real-time maps for drivers.
The services, which runs on the Live.com platform, grew out of research by Eric Horvitz,
who has been working on the project for four years.
The ClearFlow system is the result of Microsoft's application of machine learning and
intelligence as it's applied to the daily life of people. The new traffic application combines
previously acquired data from 71 cities with contextual information about the area to
formulate a forecast about likely traffic patterns.
It kicks in mainly when there's a real-time problem, such as an accident on the freeway, and
predicts the behavior of traffic elsewhere -- such as surface streets -- because of that
problem, suggesting routes that won't send you into even more traffic.

Surprise Monitoring
The software, which is based upon the JamBayes predictive traffic service, allows users to set the
types of alerts -- and the level of prediction -- they receive.
"In operation, the surprise modeling and analysis is used to let people know when current or projected
flows (both high and low) on routes that they have expressed interest in would likely surprise them,"
Microsoft Research's Eric Horvitz writes in "Machine Learning, Reasoning, and Intelligence in Daily
Life: Directions and Challenges," a research paper examining artificial intelligence and Microsoft
computing.
Microsoft's service can be accessed online or through any Internet-connected mobile device.

Predictive traffic maps are becoming more usable because GPS-enabled devices are near
ubiquitous. Inrix, which was spun out of Microsoft Research Labs and has a network of 800,000
GPS-enabled devices, gathers data for TomTom and Dash, two in-car traffic and direction services,
as well as MapQuest.com.
Pulling together all of that information isn't easy, though. The real-time, two-way communication
from car to navigation system creates a complex data set that can be used to parse out specific
traffic patterns.
Inrix, for instance, gathers data mainly through partnerships with commercial drivers -- long-haul
truckers, taxi cabs, delivery services and cable companies -- along with embedded road sensors,
Scott Sedlik, Inrix's marketing vice president, told TechNewsWorld.
The company then combines that with profile information about each vehicle -- cement
trucks travel slower than taxi drivers, for example -- to build a predictive traffic model for
an area.

These devices aren't just for traffic, however.
Microsoft's foray into the traffic market and other two-way navigation systems such as Dash
Navigation will soon be able to provide a Web-like experience for users.
By the end of the year, the real-time traffic navigation systems will include other relevant data such as
restaurant locations, hotels and businesses near a user's location, Sedlik said.
That's exactly the functionality that is starting to come to market now with devices like Dash," Sedlik
said. "Some will have information delivered by voice like OnStar and some will be delivered on a screen i
the car.

Here’s How Artificial Intelligence Will Change The Way You Navigate
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the next big thing in the world of technology. Taking on many industries, AI is
aimed lowering human intervention in processes by using machines that are designed and programmed to
perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, including, visual perception, speech recognition,
learning, reasoning, decision-making, and even, translation between languages. Machines doing such
tasks are known to lower what we know as ‘human error’ and give more accurate results.
This technology is now going to ease what in today’s time is known to cost economies billions – traffic
congestion. According to reports, traffic congestion cost the US economy a whopping $121 billion every
year. In Indian capital, Delhi, this number stood at $10 billion in early 2017, a study by IIT Madras shows.
This is on the account of fuel wastage due to the idling of vehicles, productivity loss due to people being
stuck on their way to work, air pollution and road crashes.
To help lower this cost for the national capital, AI-based traffic systems will be introduced that will ease navigation
by providing real-time information, alternate routes, among others. To pave the way for Delhi Police’s decade-old
proposal, intelligent traffic management system (ITMS), the Ministry of Home Affairs has given its approval to
appoint an international consultant for the implementation.
The proposed system promotes the use of AI to manage traffic and an array of sensors to detect violators.
While the Delhi Police have already begun the task of selecting the consultant, the project will be implemented in
three phases with the first being completed in 2019.

New AI Algorithm Beats Even the World's Worst Traffic
To this end, computer scientists at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have developed a
new intelligent routing algorithm that attempts to minimize the occurrence of spontaneous traffic jams—
those sudden snarls caused by greedy merges and other isolated disruptions—throughout a roadway
network. It's both computationally distributed and fast, requirements for any real-world traffic
management system. Their work is described in the April issue of IEEE Transactions on Emerging
Topics in Computational Intelligence.
Route-finding is a natural branch of computer science. What we're really talking about is graph theory, a
field that's been kicking out algorithms since well before electronic computers even existed. The
problem is that routing algorithms can be extraordinarily complex for even small numbers of possible
paths and small numbers of actors. Traffic, however, deals with a whole lot of routes and a whole lot of
cars (and other "agents," such as traffic lights).

The Nanyang researchers' algorithm starts off by just assuming that, given enough traffic density, shit is going to
happen. Someone is going to make a greedy merge—something is going to cause enough of a
traffic perturbation to result in a network breakdown. Breakdown in this context is a technical-ish term indicating
that for some period of time the traffic outflow from a segment of roadway is going to be less than the traffic
inflow.
"We assume that the traffic breakdown model has already been given, and the probability of traffic breakdown
occurrence is larger than zero (meaning that traffic breakdowns would occur), and our goal is to direct the traffic
flow so that the overall traffic breakdown probability is minimized," Hongliang Guo and colleagues write. Put
differently, "our objective is to maximize the probability that none of the network links encounters a traffic
breakdown."
So, the goal of the algorithm is this maximization, which reduces to a fairly tidy equation. It then becomes a
machine learning problem. Things get pretty messy at this point, but just understand that we're taking the current
traffic load, adding an unknown additional load that might enter the network at any time, and then coming up with
probabilities of network breakdown at each of the network's nodes or intersections. Crunch some linear
algebra and we wind up with optimal routes through the network.

You really want to help fill in the white spaces,” says Maron. “I imagine that is perhaps how someone would feel about helping others by improving Waze’s coverage.” However, he says some people may reconsider when it becomes clear that Waze seeks to make money using their data. The services, which runs on the Live.com platform, grew out of research by Eric Horvitz, who has been working on the project for four years. The ClearFlow system is the result of Microsoft's application of machine learning and intelligence as it's applied to the daily life of people. The new traffic application combines previously acquired data from 71 cities with contextual information about the area to formulate a forecast about likely traffic patterns. It kicks in mainly when there's a real-time problem, such as an accident on the freeway, and predicts the behavior of traffic elsewhere -- such as surface streets -- because of that problem, suggesting routes that won't send you into even more traffic.

Taking on many industries, AI is aimed lowering human intervention in processes by using machines that are designed and programmed to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, including, visual perception, speech recognition, learning, reasoning, decision-making, and even, translation between languages. Machines doing such tasks are known to lower what we know as ‘human error’ and give more accurate results. This technology is now going to ease what in today’s time is known to cost economies billions – traffic congestion. According to reports, traffic congestion cost the US economy a whopping $121 billion every year. In Indian capital, Delhi, this number stood at $10 billion in early 2017, a study by IIT Madras shows. This is on the account of fuel wastage due to the idling of vehicles, productivity loss due to people being stuck on their way to work, air pollution and road crashes. To help lower this cost for the national capital, AI-based traffic systems will be introduced that will ease navigation by providing real-time information, alternate routes, among others. To pave the way for Delhi Police’s decade-old proposal, intelligent traffic management system (ITMS), the Ministry of Home Affairs has given its approval to appoint an international consultant for the implementation. The proposed system promotes the use of AI to manage traffic and an array of sensors to detect violators. While the Delhi Police have already begun the task of selecting the consultant, the project will be implemented in three phases with the first being completed in 2019.

It's both computationally distributed and fast, requirements for any real-world traffic management system. Their work is described in the April issue of IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence. Route-finding is a natural branch of computer science. What we're really talking about is graph theory, a field that's been kicking out algorithms since well before electronic computers even existed. The problem is that routing algorithms can be extraordinarily complex for even small numbers of possible paths and small numbers of actors. Traffic, however, deals with a whole lot of routes and a whole lot of cars (and other "agents," such as traffic lights).

Breakdown in this context is a technical-ish term indicating that for some period of time the traffic outflow from a segment of roadway is going to be less than the traffic inflow. "We assume that the traffic breakdown model has already been given, and the probability of traffic breakdown occurrence is larger than zero (meaning that traffic breakdowns would occur), and our goal is to direct the traffic flow so that the overall traffic breakdown probability is minimized," Hongliang Guo and colleagues write. Put differently, "our objective is to maximize the probability that none of the network links encounters a traffic breakdown." So, the goal of the algorithm is this maximization, which reduces to a fairly tidy equation. It then becomes a machine learning problem. Things get pretty messy at this point, but just understand that we're taking the current traffic load, adding an unknown additional load that might enter the network at any time, and then coming up with probabilities of network breakdown at each of the network's nodes or intersections. Crunch some linear algebra and we wind up with optimal routes through the network.
