Enhanced Learning

Module Leader: Dr James Stanfield
Module aims
The module will aim to:
• Enable students to better understand the potential
role that technology can play in the teaching and
learning process
• Enable students to survey the main technology-
based formats available to support learning and to
identify how schools have adopted and
accommodated these formats and to what effect
• Enable students to explore their own personal use
of technology for learning and investigate emerging
patterns and issues.

• Review of the Presentations – Key
Issues and Themes
• TEL: Lessons from Failure and the
Principles for Digital Development
• TEL: Conclusions and Future Directions
Assignment 1 (40%)
In the future, what kind of
technology enhanced learning do
you think will have the greatest
impact?
Referring to existing research and examples of
best practice, please explain why.
Assignment 2 (60%)
Nature of the assignment
• The assignment comprises a 2,500 word essay which
draws on key literature, critical thinking and evidence to
make a well substantiated argument.
• It is expected that students draw on sources presented in
the taught sessions and their wider reading to support
their argument and discussion.
• Why is technology enhanced learning in schools failing to
achieve its full potential? Referring to existing research
identify lessons from the past that can help inform the
future.

Learning objectives
In this lecture we will consider
• The history & growth of technology in
education
• The current use of technology in education
• Personal learning networks
History & Growth
Emerging themes:
• innovations initially involved hardware, with a shift to
include software over time
• devices are becoming smaller, more powerful and cheaper
• the number of innovations has increased dramatically since
2000
• hardware and software are now becoming smarter – more
intelligent
• there has been a dramatic increase in global connectivity
since 1990
• technology now plays a key role in many areas of our lives
outside of school
Potential negative impacts
Potential negative impact from increasing
use of technology in education :
• a decline in social skills – communication,
collaboration.
• a decline in handwriting skills
• increasing back pain
• visual impairment
• decreasing attention spans
• Digital dementia!
