The divide of
Steve Wheeler - http://goo.gl/QK6S6
• Feelings of isolation
• Lack of motivation
• Loss of relevance
• Diminished chance of success
Can lead
to
http://goo.gl/TzYY7
• A passion for student wellfare and
success;
• Carefull curriculum design;
• Dynamic iterative instructional
design;
• Based on continuous evaluation;
• The correct/ relevant use of ICTs
But there
are
initiatives
that bridge
this divide
through
http://goo.gl/IAQ50 http://goo.gl/Xf1mGhttp://goo.gl/aG5aG
This video
shows that
in distance
learning we
sometimes
forget to
teach.
1. The good old LMS (Ukwanda rural
rotations)
2. Something from the blogosphere
and the Podworld (Mphil in HSE)
3. Cloud computing in some of its forms
(CHEC ICT course)
4. A blended (mobile) appraoch
towards community (ACE in
Mathematics)
5. Towards virtual (web) classrooms
(The FHS Rural Clinical School)
Here are
some web
and mobile
scenarios
that try and
bridge the
divide
http://goo.gl/1KBvG
1. The good
old LMS
(Ukwanda
rural
rotations)
The teaching problem/ challenge:
• Lack of communication between peers
• Lack of community
• Lack of feedback on assignments
• Lack of an archive of projects
Technologies:
• Moodle (LMS) tools (forums,
assignments, content)
• Internet hotspots and netbooks
Teaching and Learning event:
• Dialogue
• Creation
• Formative assessment

2. Something
from the
blogosphere
and the
Podworld
(Mphil in HSE
– e-Learning
module)
The teaching problems/ challenges:
• Experience „e-Learning” hands-on
• Facilitate the development of and
reflection on an e-Learning prototype
• Assessment of assignment and
reflections
Technologies:
• Blackboard (LMS) tools (forums,
assignments, content)
• Blogs
• Slideshare
Teaching and Learning events:
• Acquisition
• Creation and collaboration
• Formative assessment
• Reflection

3. Cloud
computing
in some of
its forms
(CHEC ICT
course)
The teaching problems/ challenges:
• 1 Month to introduce array of
technologies (only three f2f days)
• Experience online technologies
• Facilitate a group of participants online
Technologies:
• Google forms (pre-course surveys)
• Moodle (LMS) tools (forums,
assignments, content, blogs)
• Screencasting and Podcasting
• Webconferencing (Adobe Connect)
• Wiki (www.wikispaces.com)
Teaching and Learning events:
• Acquisition, collaboration
• Formative feedback and dialogue
• Creation and reflection

Blended Learning Model for the ACE in Mathematics
Example of a synchronous chat in Moodle

Ingrid
Mostert
(ACE
facilitator)
says the
following
about the
blended
approach:
“I believe that using a blended learning
model allows us to reduce the sense of
isolation so often experienced by distance
education students. The model allows
regular two way communication between us
and the students and also between the
students themselves. The students see us
and each other at the ITE sessions; they get
regular SMS's from us (and ask us questions
via SMS) and they can access the online
discussions and material anytime, anywhere.
Little things like having profile pictures and
monthly chat sessions make a big difference
to a sense of belonging and this in turn helps
motivate the students to make a success of
their studies. “ (September 2011)
5. Towards
virtual (web)
classrooms
(The FHS
Rural
Clinical
School)
The teaching problems/ challenges:
• Specialists are in Tygerberg H
• Students are in rural hospitals
• Tutorials need to be synchronous
Technologies:
• MS Lync – Web conference
• Mimio Electronic Whiteboard
Teaching and Learning events:
• Acquisition
• Dialogue
• Practice

Lets connect! (with Opera Mini)
http://connect.sun.ac.za/m
By when do you think most of
your students will have
smartphones that can surf the
web?
(a) 2012
(b) 2013
(c) 2014
(d) 2015
Question 1:
Select all the technologies
that you think can be used in
distance education…
Question 2:
On a lighter note:
Whatever we do –
we should
remember that
there are dangers
and limits to
working with
technology … 
Thank you
Dankie
