Denotation and Connotation
Monday 18th September
In media-studies terminology,
denotation is the first level of
analysis: What the audience can visually
see in front of them.
Connotation, is the second level
of analysis, being what the
denotation represents.

Denotation and Connotation
Monday 18th September
Denotation and Connotation form part of what is called SEMIOTICS.
In semiotics, denotation and connotation are terms describing the relationship
between the signifier and the signified, and an analytic distinction is made
between two types of signifieds: a denotative signified and a connotative signified.
Meaning includes both denotation and connotation.
Probably the leading theorist in relation to semiotics is Roland Barthes.
