How to Repurpose
Event Video into
Durable Online
Learning Assets
Michael Kolowich, Founder/CEO
KnowledgeVision
@MichaelKolowich
Our agenda today
 Designed vs. captured learning content
 Where does captured content come from?
 On-demand presentations: what’s possible
 How to capture
 How to create
 How to store, distribute, and build into
collections
 Your questions
- 2 -
Two types of multimedia
learning content
- 3 -
Designed Content Repurposed or “Captured” Conte
Why deploy captured content when
possible?
- 4 -
 “Interactive video
content that once cost
us $3,000 per finished
hour to design is now
costing $100-200 per
finished hour to
capture, without
sacrificing
effectiveness.”
--Director of Learning & Development,
Global Recruiting & HR Services Company
e-Learning content is all around
us!

Where to capture content in your
organization
 Employee orientations
 Company meetings
 Sales meetings
 Management training
 Executive conference keynotes
 Lunch-and-learns
 Tech chalk-talks
 Customer events

Here’s what’s possible with today’s
online presentation technology
So how do you get there?
- 11 -
Capture Assemble Store/Collect/Distribute
Capturing Video Learning
Content
 Need to capture both the narration and the
slides so they can be put together
 Approach varies by capture source
 Content you capture yourself
 Content you ask others to capture for you
 Content that already exists and must be
repurposed
- 12 -
Tools for capturing video
Record to card
media like SD!
Camera with XLR input
is useful for events.
Video tripods are
different…
fluid head!
Plug into sound system.
If you’re the only microphone,
use wireless if possible;
second shotgun mic
for Q&A?

MICROPHONE
Tips for capturing video for
presentations
 Ensure adequate lighting
for speaker
 Prepare to track roving
speakers
 Generally, shoot from waist
up to capture both facial
expressions and hand
gestures
 Include screen when speaker interacts with it.
 Decide how you’ll handle live screen demos
 edit in
 shoot the screen
 Take notes on slide changes, other cues.
- 14 -
When you’re getting video already
recorded
 Get it in digital file form if at all possible (not
tape)
 Compressed form is great, but:
 No smaller than 640x360 frame size
 Not less than 500 kbps bit rate
 Ideal format for online presentations:
 Format: MPEG-4 (.mp4) file, H.264
 Frame size: 640x360
 Frame rate: 30 frames/sec (25 fps in Europe)
 Bit rate: 496 kilobits/sec total (400k video, 96k
audio) - 15 -
Three steps to re-purposed
content
- 16 -
Capture Assemble Store/Collect/Distribute
• Video or audio files
• Slide deck files, other images/web pages
• Synchronization timings
• Supplemental materials and links
• Metadata (descriptions, speakers, etc.)
You’ll need a tool for trimming and
compressing video
 The good news:
there’s a great one
available.
 The better news: it’s
free.
 MPEG Streamclip
will:
 compress your video
to “web size”
 trim the start and end
of your video
 “normalize” your audio - 17 -

Footnotes!!!
Why are footnotes and
reference links important?
- 19 -
 They invite viewers to
deeper involvement with
the material
 They unburden the main
presentation from
material that’s of more
limited interest
 They increase credibility
by documenting sources
 They encourage
exploration of more
learning assets.

To summarize…
 Repurposed or “captured” content is a highly
efficient and effective way to supplement your
video learning assets.
 Repurposable learning content is all around us.
 Capturing content well requires some
forethought, but is not “rocket science”.
 Modern tools are essential to creating online
presentations that engage, efficiently
 Collections of online presentations can be
assembled and distributed either through Learning
Management Systems or standalone galleries.
