Consulting Presented by: Laura Quinn
Definition Collaborative consultation is an interactive process that enables teams of people with diverse expertise to generate creative solutions to mutually defined problems. The outcome is enhanced, altered, and produces solutions that are different from those that the individual team member would have produced independently. (page 1)
The consulting teacher can provide services to secondary teachers and their students in two ways. The first way is through the provision of indirect services. Consultant and secondary teacher work jointly to clarify a problem, assess the student, develop an instructional approach, and monitor its effects.
…continued The second way the consultant teacher can assist secondary teachers and their students is through the provision of direct services. In such situations, the consultant and the secondary teacher still work together to clarify the problem, conduct assessment, and plan an intervention; however, the consultant is responsible for teaching the student.
Goals Maximize the interaction between students with disabilities and their peers through development and implementation of comprehensive, effective educational programs Enhance the teacher’s skills to facilitate subsequent problem solving.
Advantages of Consulting Effective means of increasing the skill levels of students with disabilities Teamwork makes general and special education more effective due to a combined effort “ Consultant Teacher” dissociates students from being labeled. Consultation offers indirect services to students through their teachers; therefore, students with disabilities can remain in the general classroom and benefit from instruction provided by the secondary teacher. The general classroom provides appropriate peer role models to be emulated by students with disabilities Nondisabled peers have opportunity to work with students with disabilities
…continued Consultation enhances the skill repertoires of general educator by providing on-the-job training in areas such as task analysis, behavior management, diagnostic assessment, curricular adaptation. Consulting teachers can reduce cost of special education services. Students can remain in regular classes in neighborhood schools, thus reducing the costs associated. Communication required to implement the consultant model can dispel the mystique associated with special education. The consultant model is uniquely suited to the secondary school. Use of consultation facilities the identification of staff development needs that can be addressed through in-service education.
