Evaluation Part 6
   what have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
   constructing this product?
Introduction
Through the course of AS Media Studies and through the process of
constructing this piece as well as my preliminary task I have learnt a great
deal about technology, the use of it, how it’s developed and how to use
equipment I had never laid eyes on before the course.
Learning and Understanding
I had already learnt briefly about the use of a camera within the media,
how it is used in specific ways to create certain meanings and
atmospheres from still shots from cameras used in adverts from the
movements of the camera used within the filming industry which is what I
have been focusing a lot more on through the course of this year so far.
My understanding of technical terminology created through technology
has grown significantly over the past few months through this course and
this has been assisted by the experience I have had actually getting to
grips and using equipment in ways I couldn’t before the year had started.
Experimenting
By filming little scenes with my group and constructing my preliminary
task, this has helped me immensely when creating my final piece. Through
the lecturing of our teachers and the ability to use the camera equipment
we were able to have a much more active learning experience by putting in
what we’d learnt into practice using a Sony camcorder. I feel much more
aware of the importance and creation of specific shots, zoom and
movements in the Media industry and is what has helped me to develop
my skills to interpret them into the final piece of filming which was the
film opening clip.
Experimenting
I found out by experiencing and practicing with the camcorder that there
were strengths with using the tripod when filming as it made the piece
look significantly more professional as it was steadier than handheld. This
helped me and my group when filming the final task as we will most
probably get a higher mark for using the tripod creating steady movement
rather than shaky which looked amateurish.
During our first experiences with the camcorder, we found the sound was
extremely faint and lacked volume compared to when we used a
microphone. This was a lesson well learnt as it has improved the quality of
our final piece and I would never have used a microphone before the start
of the year.
Problems With Technology
We also learnt that some of the shots drawn in our storyboard were
harder to produce than once anticipated as the high angle shot in the
bathroom of the Goth character putting on bracelets was hard to execute
due to a wall which ended up with one of my fellow team members sitting
upon a window seal determined to get the shot.
Analysing
Nearer the start of the course when learning about camera shots, angles
and movements I completed various tasks to challenge myself such as
analysing various clips of programmes and films such as The Hustle and
Dr. Who in order to progress my learning further to make sure I fully
understood the meanings and importance of these terms in order for
myself to be able to recreate them easily with more understanding. These
examples of analysis are all available on my blog.
Learning
All of the technology we have faced and used during this course has
helped to build our knowledge from the simplest of learning about camera
shots, movements and continuity to the practical work testing what
worked best for our film opening as without trying there is no knowing.
Altogether, the tripod, camcorder and microphone have all helped to
improve the quality of our film opening; I believe that knowing about how
to use them was even more important.
Editing Technology
To edit all of our captured footage we used free software called Premiere
Pro which we learnt how to use at the start of the year. We learnt the
entire basics from shortening, removing parts as well as great affects and
transitions available to make the piece much more exhilarating for the
audience, to keep them interested. After playing around with Premiere Pro
a few times, I eventually got to grips with it and found editing my final
piece with my group a whole lot easier as we developed new and existing
skills on the program.
Overall…
Overall I feel as if I have fully engaged with the course in learning about
the various types of technology and techniques used within the media
industry letting me to use technology on a much higher level that I haven’t
done before allowing me to progress and use it in an effective and
successful manner in order to gain the best possible grade I am able to
when I constructed my final product. I believe I have a much better
understanding in the media world and the importance of technology and
how you use it in the correct way to create a certain meaning or
atmosphere and I believe that I have been able to develop my skills
immensely helping me in the long-run when I created the final piece.
