Stepladders: freestanding means of access to be used
carefully
•  Not designed to take any degree of side loading; easily overturned.
•  For light work only, for a short duration.
Side loading: work that imposes weight that could tip the stepladders
over (eg by pushing against wall), or carrying a load outside the
perimeter of the steps that will cause tipping.
Short duration is between 15 and 30 minutes.

•  Applying paint or wallpaper in normal circumstances would not impose
side loading.

Sideloading
•  Unnecessary excess pressure on the wall could impose side loading.
•  A risk assessment is required for each case.

Carry out a visual inspection before using stepladders
There must be no damage
to the stiles (the outside
uprights), steps and top
platform.
Stays, hinges, chains or
cords must be of sufficient
and equal length and in
good condition.
Check that rubber or plastic
non-slip feet are not missing.
Steps must be clean and dry.
Beware of wet, greasy and icy
steps.

Checking the standards
•  Always check for the relevant standard when buying, hiring or using
stepladders.
•  If it is not marked on the stepladder, or in the manufacturer’s guidance,
contact the manufacturer or supplier to ensure that the stepladder has
been manufactured to the required British or European Standard.

Checking the standards
There are three British and European Standards that relate to safe working
loads:
• Class1 (Industrial): Maximum static vertical load is 175kg.
• Class 3 (Domestic): Maximum static vertical load is 125kg. Never use
this for work.
• BS EN 131: Maximum static vertical load is 150 kg.

All stepladders should meet the requirements of the appropriate British
or European Standards.
• BS 1129 (British) applies to wooden ladders and stepladders.
• BS 2037 (British) applies to metal ladders and stepladders.
• BS EN 131:1993 (European) applies to both metal and wooden ladders
and stepladders.
