Application Types There are lots of different types of application, each one is good at doing something different. Word Processors Drawing Software Photo Editing Software Desktop Publishing Software Presentation Software Spreadsheets Databases
Word Processors Used for editing text, for example writing: Letters Essays Reports Microsoft Word is the most common example
Drawing Software Usually used to create original, vector based graphics Vector = Line based images, stored as a series of coordinates, the file size is usually smaller than bitmap Bitmap = Usually photos, stored as dots called pixels, the file size is usually bigger than vector
Photo-Editing Software Usually used to edit bitmaps, for example photographs
Desktop Publishing Software Good for designing publications that include a mixture of images and text, and may also require a complex layout For example: Leaflets Magazines
Presentation Software For making presentations, usually designed to be projected onto a large screen and seen by many people. They can include: Text Images Animations
Spreadsheets Usually used to process and analyse numeric information They can be used to produce statistics and create charts They can also be used as models to create predictions Good for dealing with finances (money)
Databases Allows you to store large amounts of data in an organised way Stored in fields and records The data can be searched easily and is usually much more time efficient than paper-based systems
