Summary information
• Final exam will take 3 hours
• Exam covers: two essays, three source questions
• Exam is out of 90 marks (25 marks per essay; 40 marks all
source questions)
• Final mark is out of 140 marks (including Dissertation)
Marking instructions - Advanced Higher History essay
Marking
Your essays (25 marks) will be graded based on four criteria:
• Structure
Include a clear and detailed Introduction, Main section, Conclusion
• Analysis/Evaluation/LoA
Build a clear and consistent line of argument throughout the essay
• Historical sources
Include relevant and regular reference to historians’ views
• Thoroughness
Include detailed facts and examples, linked to analysis/evaluation
Timing
• Your exam will take 3 hours to answer two essays and
three source questions
• Aim for 50 minutes per essay – do not spend too long on
one single essay
• As a general guide your time should be spent as follows:
• Write a plan 3 minutes
• Write an introduction 5 minutes
• Write the main section 36 minutes
• Write a conclusion 6 minutes
