PHYSICAL CHANGES 
YEAR 8 – CHEMICAL CHANGES
AIM 
To observe physical changes.
EQUIPMENT 
• copper sulfate crystals 
• spatula 
• 100 ml beaker 
• stirring rod 
• bunsen burner 
• evaporating basin
RISK ASSESSMENT

METHOD 
1. Pour 50 ml of distilled water into a 100 mL beaker. 
2. Add a few crystals of copper (II) sulfate to the distilled 
water using a spatula. 
3. Use a stirring rod to dissolve completely. 
4. Record your observations. 
5. Transfer some of your solution into an evaporating basin. 
6. Set up the bunsen burner equipment for heating and place 
the evaporating basin on top. 
7. Leave the beaker there until almost all the water has 
evaporated. Turn off the bunsen. 
8. Record your observations.

1. Using your results, identify some common signs that 
show a physical reaction has taken place. 
2. Were any of your results reversible? Explain why 
this may or may not be so?
