Difference Between CBSE and
ICSE Board
Examination Boards
 An examination board (or exam board) is an
organization that sets examinations, is responsible for
marking them, and distributes results. Some are run
by governmental entities; some are run as not-for-
profit organizations.
 In India, board examinations refer to the public
examinations that are conducted at the end of the
10th grade education, and at the end of the 12th
grade education. The scores achieved in these exams
are considered very important for getting into
universities, professional courses or training programs
and other occupations.
Examination Boards In India
 India has three national boards and other state
boards which conduct board examinations for
students in classes 10th and 12th .
 There are three national boards in our country
namely Central board of Secondary Education
(CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate
Examinations (CISCE) and National Institute of
Open Schooling (NIOS).
CBSE
 The Central Board of Secondary
Education (CBSE) is a national
level board of education in India
for public and private schools,
controlled and managed by
Union Government of India.
 CBSE has asked all schools
affiliated to follow only NCERT
curriculum.
 There are approximately 20,299
schools in India and 220 schools
in 28 foreign countries affiliated
to the CBSE.
 CBSE affiliates all Kendrya
Vidyalayas, all Jawahar Navodya
Vidyalayas, private schools, and
most of the schools approved
by central government of India.
History of CBSE
 The first education board was set up as Uttar
Pradesh Board of High School and Intermediate
Education in 1921.
 In 1929, the government of India set up a joint
Board named "Board of High School and
Intermediate Education, Rajputana". This
included Ajmer, Central India, and Gwalior. Later
it was confined to
Ajmer, Bhopal and Vindhya Pradesh.
 In 1952, it became the "Central Board of
Secondary Education".
ICSE
 The Indian Certificate of
Secondary Education (ICSE) is
an examination conducted by
the Council for the Indian
School Certificate Examination.
 It is a private, non-governmental
board of school education in
India for class 10th. It is
designed to fulfill the
recommendation of New
Education policy 1986.
 The mode of examination in
ICSE is English.
 Only the regular students from
the affiliated colleges of ICSE are
allowed to appear in this
examination. Private students
are not allowed for this
examination.
History of ICSE
 The ICSE Council was established in 1958 by the
University of Cambridge Local Examinations
Syndicate to ensure that its examinations become
adapted to the educational needs of the country and
assign the ultimate control of the same on the council.
The council was registered as a Society under the
Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 on 19
December 1967.
 The object of the council is educational, and includes
the promotion of science, literature, the fine arts and
the diffusion of useful knowledge by conducting
school examinations through the medium of English.
 The Council exists solely for educational purposes
and not for purposes of profit.
