This document discusses making computer tasks at work more playful by designing systems to encourage playful behavior. It argues computers are well-suited for playful exploration due to certain characteristics that allow user control. A pilot study of professionals and clerical workers highlights how playfulness can emerge in computer use, such as concentrating intensely or experimenting with different functions. The consequences of play, like positive affect and learning, may transfer to playful computer tasks at work. Overall playfulness in work activities is an important but understudied topic.
