Open source ECM is emerging as a viable alternative to traditional proprietary ECM systems. The ratification of the CMIS standard in 2010 allows content to be more easily shared across different repositories, addressing previous issues of vendor lock-in. This has contributed to a growing interest in open source ECM platforms and the possibility of more flexible, customizable content applications. Nuxeo is presented as an example of an open source ECM platform that can be used to build both generic and industry-specific content applications.
