Chapter 3 - Living Things and Their Environments

Lesson 1 - Where Do Organisms Live?

        Science Background
· An organism is a living thing. All organisms
need food, water, shelter, and living space.
· An organism's habitat is the place where it
lives.
· Ecology is the scientific study of
interactions among organisms and their
environment.

Chapter 3 - Living Things and Their Environments

Lesson 1 - Where Do Organisms Live?

       Science Background
There are many different kinds of
habitats, each inhabited by different
kinds of organisms. Organisms often
compete with one another for resources
such as water, food, or space in a habitat.
For example, predators such as coyotes,
hawks, and snakes may compete for prey
food resources such as rabbits and mice.
Chapter 3 - Living Things and Their Environments
Lesson 1 - Where Do Organisms Live?
        Science Background
A tropical rain forest and a desert are
examples of terrestrial habitats. A tropical
rain forest is characterized by high
temperatures and precipitation almost every
day. Deserts receive little rain. Many, but
not all, deserts are hot during the day and
very cool at night.
Chapter 3 - Living Things and Their Environments
Lesson 1 - Where Do Organisms Live?

         Science Background
· A wetland is land that is covered with water
at least part of the year. Ponds, swamps,
and marshes are examples of wetlands.
· Oceans are one of several different types of
aquatic habitats. Oceans are huge expanses
of salt water that cover roughly three-
quarters of the earth's surface.
Chapter 3 - Living Things and Their Environments
Lesson 1 - Where Do Organisms Live?
        Science Background
· All the things that surround an organism
make up its environment. The environment
encompasses a larger area than a habitat.
There can be many different habitats in an
environment.
· Organisms change their environment in
different ways. When beavers build dams or
groundhogs dig tunnels, they are changing
their environment.

     How can humans change their
            environment?
Chapter 3 - Living Things and Their Environments
Lesson 1 - Where Do Organisms Live?

Remember....
            an environment is everything that
            surrounds you. It includes:
            · your habitat
            · friends
            · school
            · home
