Universal design (UD) aims to meet the needs of a wide range of potential users with different characteristics through inclusive design. UD can be applied to curriculum, teaching, and learning environments. There are three broad UD guidelines: providing multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement. The guidelines suggest offering options for how information is presented to learners, how learners demonstrate knowledge, and how to motivate and sustain student effort and interest. UD aims to create curriculum that is accessible and effective for all students.
