Creating A Literate Environment in your ClassroomLiteracy unlocks the door to learning throughout life, is essential to development and health, and opens the way for democratic participation and active citizenship." ~ Kofi Annan
How do you get to know your literate learner?*Reading Inventories are a great way to get to know your students at their own learning level.*You can see their progression throughout the year and also focus on things that they either struggle with or excel in.*Reading inventories, in one form or another, have existed as long as teachers have been interested in better understanding their students’ reading development (Afflerbach, 2007).
Selecting A TextSelecting a text is a key element to literacy instruction. It is important to bring in other types of text to allow your students to gain a deeper understanding of the types of texts that are available (i.e., web articles, leveled readers, themed stories, or basal series).Teach students the different genres of stories that are avialable and how best to distinguish between those genres. When readers know what to do during reading, it has a tremendous impact on how well they comprehend, but comprehension involves more than just reader factors. It also involves text factors (Tomkins, 2010)
The Interactive PerspectiveThe Interactive Perspective allows for students to be strategic learners.By using effective questioning, adequate feedback, and setting a purpose for learning, students will be set up for success.Allow students to get involved in the lesson and lead it by having a dialogue with their peers.Students will begin to think at a much deeper level when using the different perspectives.Reading is a constructive process of creating meaning that involves the reader, the text, and the purpose within social and cultural contexts (Tomkins, 2010).
Critical and Response PerspectivesStudents need to think with a deeper understanding.Students need to be able to distinguish different parts of a book and be able to discuss it with their peers.Select a text that displays a critical stance.Allow children to be critical of your responses and talk through others’ responses.Understanding how students learn, and partly how they learn to read and write influences the instructional approaches that teachers use (Tomkins, 2010).
