This document discusses the use of electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) and describes a researcher's experience transitioning to using an ELN called eCAT. It outlines the researcher's goals in seeking a paperless solution, the needs and functionality desired in an ELN, and how eCAT meets those needs through its templating features, ability to link various files and data types, searchability, and audit trail. The conclusion acknowledges that while change can be slow, transitioning to an ELN provides significant benefits for organization, collaboration, and ensuring work can be repeated or continued by others.
