Answers to Questions Asked by Viewers During the Webinar QUESTIONS LOG
Q: Is in-memory the same as Qlik in Tableau 10? A: Tableau has in-memory capabilities in the form of Tableau extracts, which get loaded into memory and store data in a columnar fashion. It is different than Qlik in that you are not required to load your data into the Qlik server first. You can connect directly to your data sources. Q: Can Tableau use a file SAS dataset directly? A: Yes .sas files can be brought into Tableau directly. Q: Can I use a .sas7bdat file type in Tableau 10? Q: Is the metadata reuse available in Tableau 10? A: Tableau’s metadata still resides at the workbook/file level. You cannot create or modify it anywhere else, so process and policy are necessary to govern this area. Q: Can I can create a presentation template in which I’m able to choose my own colors? A: You can assign color palettes to data items and those will get reused in subsequent worksheets within a workbook. Custom color palettes can be created and brought into Tableau as well. Q: Does the cross data source filtering have to match on identical field names or can this relationship be manually defined? A: You can manually define this via the “Edit Relationships” dialog. Q: Have you noticed any major bugs in Tableau Desktop or Server? A: Nothing major as of yet! Q: Can I connect directly to a database and create reports in the front end? A: Yes, you can connect to several types of databases and create reports. Q: When I publish a workbook to Tableau Server, do I still need to manually add data sources to the server in Tableau 10? A: Tableau would publish the data source to the server automatically before upgrading to 10, unless it was an extract, in which case you will be redirected to create the extract first. Q: Is there a Tableau 10 forum that I can join to learn more about it? A: Yes, create a profile at public.tableau.com and you will gain access to the community and all of its valuable assets. Q: Does Cognos Analytics v11 have the same features as Tableau 10? A: Not necessarily, both products have their strengths, so it depends upon what your needs are within your organization. The nice thing is that both Tableau and Cognos can coexist nicely. In order for them to work together, Senturus has created a Connector to allows Tableau direct access to data in IBM Cognos. Q: Do I have to do modeling with the database before I can access it from the front end? A: Modeling is not required depending on the source. In many cases, you will need to do data prep so that Tableau can consume the data in an optimal way. Q: With the new data blending feature can I join based on multiple fields? Also, can I join more than two tables together as well? A: Yes, you can join on multiple fields. Q: How's the performance in Tableau 10 for combining data from different servers in a single data source when the data sets are large or from different databases? A: It really depends on the overall architecture and applying the right components in an optimal way. To evaluate the performance, you need to look at the database architecture, server architecture, the network performance, and (very importantly) the actual reports that are being used. Q: If we upgrade Tableau Desktop 10, is it necessary to upgrade Tableau Server to 10 as well?   • 31. Q: Is in-memory the same as Qlik in Tableau 10? A: Tableau has in-memory capabilities in the form of Tableau extracts, which get loaded into memory and store data in a columnar fashion. It is different than Qlik in that you are not required to load your data into the Qlik server first. You can connect directly to your data sources. Q: Can Tableau use a file SAS dataset directly? A: Yes .sas files can be brought into Tableau directly. Q: Can I use a .sas7bdat file type in Tableau 10?   • 32. Q: Is the metadata reuse available in Tableau 10? A: Tableau’s metadata still resides at the workbook/file level. You cannot create or modify it anywhere else, so process and policy are necessary to govern this area. Q: Can I can create a presentation template in which I’m able to choose my own colors? A: You can assign color palettes to data items and those will get reused in subsequent worksheets within a workbook. Custom color palettes can be created and brought into Tableau as well. Q: Does the cross data source filtering have to match on identical field names or can this relationship be manually defined? A: You can manually define this via the “Edit Relationships” dialog.   • 33. Q: Have you noticed any major bugs in Tableau Desktop or Server? A: Nothing major as of yet! Q: Can I connect directly to a database and create reports in the front end? A: Yes, you can connect to several types of databases and create reports. Q: When I publish a workbook to Tableau Server, do I still need to manually add data sources to the server in Tableau 10? A: Tableau would publish the data source to the server automatically before upgrading to 10, unless it was an extract, in which case you will be redirected to create the extract first. Q: Does Cognos Analytics v11 have the same features as Tableau 10? A: Not necessarily, both products have their strengths, so it depends upon what your needs are within your organization. The nice thing is that both Tableau and Cognos can coexist nicely. In order for them to work together, Senturus has created a Connector to allows Tableau direct access to data in IBM Cognos.   • 38. Q: If we upgrade Tableau Desktop 10, is it necessary to upgrade Tableau Server to 10 as well? A: Yes, you will need to upgrade both Tableau Desktop and Server to 10 if you want to publish from Desktop to Server. Q: Does Tableau 10 use Framework Manager like Cognos Analytics? A: There is no Framework Manager tool in Tableau. However, it is possible to use your current Cognos Framework Manager models with the Senturus Enterprise BI Connector for Tableau.
