in an Online Course
Five Top Rules Of Netiquette in

who takes an online course should follow.
 You should remember them every time you participating an
online discussion board, wiki, or blog.
 Netiquette is a set of rules for behaving properly online.
 The top five rules are as follows.
Rule No. 1: Be Respectful,
Positive and Self-Reflective
 Remember your peers
cannot see you, or may
not know you, feelings
can be hurt if you are
not careful in how you
express yourself.
 Think before your
respond.
 Write it down first.
Reflect on what you
have said. If you feel
like you need to
critique, say it in a
positive tone.
Rule No.2: Use Proper Language
 Do not use slang or
even profane words in
an online environment.
 Do not use caps lock
when typing. It will
insinuate you are
yelling.
Rule no. 3: Use Effective
Communication
 Say exact what you mean to say. Speak and write clearly.
 Get a sense of what the discussion group is about before you
join it.
Rule no. 4: Respect
EVERYONE.
 Remember people have other things to do besides read your
email. You are not the center of their world.
 Reread before you respond and post.
 Be mindful of the words you chose and do not joke.
Rule No. 5: You Don’t
Understand, Ask.
 If you are not sure about what was said, or are trying to
interpret a classmates post, then ask again.
 A simple way to do this is to reply (or write), “I did/do not
understand …”)
The Golden Rule
of
Netiquette
The golden rule of netiquette in an online class is, do not do or
say online what you would not do or say offline. Keep in mind
that the same district rules are also in place for an online
course.
