- 4. Architects do not practice merely a craft or provide a commercial service. Architecture is a profession. The meaning of “profession” comes from the medieval concept of acknowledging (“professing”) faith in what one does in life. For architectsto profess their faithor belief in the value of whatthey are doing, they must understandthe historyof that activityso that they can truly participate in its life.
