Why
do we need to study
the History
of Architecture?
Architects do not practice
merely a craft or provide a
commercial service.
Architecture is a profession.
The meaning of “profession”
comes from the medieval
concept of acknowledging
(“professing”) faith in what
one does in life.
For architectsto profess their
faithor belief in the value of
whatthey are doing, they must
understandthe historyof that
activityso that they can truly
participate in its life.
The Values:
• know the major contributions brought about
by history which has influenced architecture
through the times
• understand the evolution of architecture
• analyze buildings and the built environment
as the products of culture
• appreciation of architecture, for its role in the
intellectual environment in which we conduct
our lives
HISTORY
A systematic, often
chronological
narrative of significant
events as relating to a
particular people,
country or period,
often including an
explanation of their
causes.
What is History?
SOCIETY
an enduring and cooperating large scale
community of people having common
traditions, institutions and identity, whose
members developed collective interests and
belief through interaction with one another.
What is Society?
CULTURE
an integrated pattern of human knowledge,
beliefs and behavior built by a group of
human beings and transmitted from one
generation to the next.
What is Culture?
CIVILIZATION
an advance state of
human society marked
by a relatively high
level of cultural,
technical and political
development.
What is Civilization?
