This document outlines various contexts to consider when mapping and understanding an artistic practice, including social/political, personal, critical/theoretical, historical, geographical, institutional, and cultural contexts. It provides examples of questions to reflect on for each context, such as how the social context impacts production and audiences, whether work relates to critical debates or theories, how knowledge is situated historically or through educational/professional backgrounds, and how place or materials influence work. Mappers are encouraged to identify which contexts are most important and overlapping for their practice and how their practice may change or evolve over time.
