a. Cultural Landscape: Shared language, religion, 
economic feature/activity, 
2. Divides up/simplifies world, helps interpret data 
B. Types 
1. Formal 
a. Everything/one inside shares the same trait 
(Religion, laws, language, etc) 
2. Functional or Nodal 
a. Organized around central focus point 
b. Farther away = Loses importance/intensity 
(distance decay) 
3. Perceptual/Vernacular 
a. People’s perceptions or Feelings

A. Distribution 
1. Density: frequency within a space 
2. Concentration: how objects spread over space 
(Clustered, dispersed) 
3. Pattern: geometric arrangement over space 
B. Diffusion 
1. Relocation: Spreading from the hearth by groups 
moving from one place to another 
2. Expansion 
a. Hierarchical: From the powerful/elite > Others 
b. Contagious: Rapid, widespread. No relocation. 
No social hierarchy 
c. Stimulus: an element spreads, but used in a 
different way then originally intended
