SERVICE LEARNING For Character Education 2011
"Everyone has the power for greatness —not for fame, but greatness , because greatness is determined by service ." Martin Luther King Jr Civil Rights Activist 1929-1968
What is Service Learning? Service learning is a process whereby students learn and develop through active participation in organized service experiences that actually meet community needs.
Why do we do it? To infuse service learning as part of character development, and promote independent thinking and problem-solving through community service. To foster reflective, empathic, and sensitive personal responses to the needs of others, and a sense of social responsibility and global citizenship. To provide us with the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and leadership skills. To encourage a life-long commitment to community involvement .
Project Brief Your class is tasked to propose plan for service learning project to be done in school during Post Exam Activities in May 2011. Students are to plan their service learning project during the allocated CE periods. With theme RECYCLING , you main objective is to set up a stall in school selling items that is made of recyclable materials or 2 nd hand items. Proceeds will go to the beneficiary of your choice.
Process The CIP leaders and Monitors will be in charge of the project and it is advisable that a planning committee be formed. You will need to draw up a proposal (see Proposal Form ) which should include details of the plan. A Project Timeline needs to be completed as part of the planning process. The timeline indicates the target dates, tasks and actions by whom to be taken. The CE teacher vets the proposal and the project timeline, and submits a copy of the Proposal Form to the CIP teacher (Mr Lim Yong Khern) for any necessary approval and purposes of record. Once the CE teacher and CIP teacher have jointly approved the Proposal Form, you can carry out their service learning project as indicated in the timeline.
Participation : CIP Hours With roles allocated, you will be provided a Service Attendance Logsheet . You can document any form of service rendered throughout the service learning project duration. * Examples of service are planning, making handicraft, rehearsing, buying materials, etc. In this way, the students take responsibility for their own participation. You should indicate the estimated amount of time spent on each type of service on the logsheet to be verified by the CE teacher.
Continued At the end of the service learning project, the CE teacher informs the CIP teacher of the aggregate number of CIP hours accumulated by the class, and particular students, if any, for keying in. Afternote: The minimum CIP hours that can be clocked by each student for this service learning project is 10 hours (from planning to execution).
Reflection Students tasked to write a post-project reflection in the form of a journal in their English journal books.
Phase 1: Pre Planning In groups of 8, headed by 5 monitors, you are to plan a service learning project to be executed during the Post Exam Activities. As a group, you must think of a beneficiary to support & provide reasons/evidence on why you have chosen this foundation. Upon selection, group members are to discuss and provide evidence on what kinds of needs do they require & how can we facilitate on catering to these needs.
Continued Provide the stall’s objective in terms of: Theme: Overall look of the stall What are you selling? Sales Targets What are your selling strategies?
Pre Planning Presentation You are given 10 minutes each to present your proposal. The requirement are as follows: Maximum 10 slights All must present
