History Early games ran on university mainframes Developed by individuals as a hobby Limited accessibility to hardware Very few games in number “ Spacewar!”   The first video game made widely available Trivia:  In 1969 Dennis Ritchie, inspired by Spacewar! started to create his own game called “Space Travel” on the PDP7 System. In the process of developing the game, it led to development of an OS. He named it UNIX. Space Travel was the first UNIX application. Dennis Ritchie today is known to the world as the founder of C Programming Language and UNIX OS
History – First Generation (’72 – ‘79) Nolan Bushnell develops “Arcade” version of SpaceWar! Bushnell sets up company – ATARI Starting investment of $250 Did not fare well commercially Bushnell went on to produce his next arcade game –PONG Receives widespread popularity Sold 10,000 units by 1973 Develops one of first commercial console for home entertainment in 1975 Retailed at $100 (Today's equivalent - $400)

CONSOLE WARS The Fifth Generation (’92 – ’02) The transition to 3D gaming had started Rise of 32 bit and 64 bit processing power of consoles Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation released in ’92 Nintendo 64 gets released in 1994  Sega and Nintendo try to appease the kids demography SONY taps a different demography – males in twenties and positions PlayStation as a lifestyle accessory Securing of this market widely regarded as key to its success. WITH GREATER HARDWARE SALES CAME GREATER THIRD PARTY SUPPORT Ultimately SONY wins the battle and carried the momentum into the next generation with PS2 PlayStation – 102 Million Units sold N64 – 33 Million Sega Saturn – 9 Million
