The Reproductive Parts
Flowering Plants
Almost 90 percent in the plant
kingdom are flowering plants.
Botanists label flowering plants as
either angiosperms or gymnosperms.
Angiosperms have seeds that are
enclosed in a container or case called
an ovary. The flowers are the most
distinctive features of angiosperms.
Flowers
The reproductive structures of
plants.
Ensure fertilization of the egg cell
within the ovule.
When the egg cell is fertilized, the
ovule develops into a seed., and
the ovary that encloses the ovules
ripens and becomes the fruit.
Parts of a flower
A flower is composed of the following
parts:
Corolla comprises the petals of flowers.
They come in various shapes and sizes.
They function for protection and attraction.
They contain nectarines that give them the
characteristic scent. Their bright colors and
scent attract agents of pollination.
Calyx comprises the sepals of the
flowers.
-typically green
-sepals protect the flower when it is
still a bud and contribute to the
process of photosynthesis of the plant.
-the petals and sepals form the floral
envelope of a flower.
Receptacle supports the entire
flower.
Peduncle or stalk connects the
flower to the branch or stem.
Collectively, these parts- calyx,
corolla, receptacle, and stalk-
comprise the accessory parts that
protect and support the essential
parts.
Stamens
• The stamens are
the male part of
the flower.
• The plant makes
pollen in the part
of the stamen
called the
anther.
stamen anther
Stamens Continued
• Part of the stamen
• Produces and holds
pollen
head of the stamen that
contain pollens grain
- Expanded and lobular
structure at the tip of the
filament. It is the pollen-
producing organ of the flower.
Anther
• Stalk that holds up the anther
• long stalk to supports the anther
Filament
The Stigma
• The stigma is the
top of the female
part of the flower.
• Pollen from another
flower collects on
the stigma’s sticky
surface.
• Found at the end of
the pistil
Pistil
• The female part of the flower
Style
• The neck of the
pistil
• Part of the
pistil that
contains the
ovules
The Ovary
The Ovary
• The ovary protects
the ovules.
• Pollen travels to
the ovules and
fertilization takes
place.
• Now the ovules will
develop into seeds.
