Why this presentation?
AWS is market leader in open cloud space but other players are making inroads into
its market share. Google cloud is one of them. In this talk, we are going to cover 10
differences between Google Cloud and AWS. Major focus is on the features which
covers common use cases. You can take this talk as stepping stone to understand
another cloud service provider if you know one of them.
We are going to touch topics like computation, networking, big data offerings etc.
Pricing also is being covered in specific section.
Who is the target audience?
 You know Either AWS or Google
… You will get a starter pad for another one.
 If you are very new to both AWS and Google
… Please use your notepad a lot, lots of keywords for you.
Agenda
 History of Google Cloud and AWS
 Comparison of services under following categories :
1. Compute
2. Networking
3. Storage
4. RDBMS
5. NoSQL
6. Bigdata
7. Analytics
8. Application Services
9. Management Services
10. Pricing
 Summary
2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016
AWS Started
EBS Started
October, removed Beta
Google Compute Engine GA
History
Google App Engine
Compute
 You can define your own customized machine on Google Cloud platform
 Google only support Automatic scaling, no manual or scheduled scaling
 Google support serial console login
 Autosuggestion about capacity usage by Google
Networking
 No IP on Load Balancer in Amazon, while in Google it has static IP
 No IPv6 support in Google
 No outgoing firewall rules in Google firewall.
 Google has specific network route algorithms, just introduced few months
back
 Google subnets can spans multiple regions while AWS has to be in same
region only locations or availability zones can be different
Storage
 You can attach your hard disk with multiple instances or servers in read only
mode.
 AWS glacier has few hours of latency while Google Nearline has latency of few
seconds
 Google snapshots are global while AWS has region based snapshots
 Google storage can be update conditionally
RDBMS
 Google only support MySQL, PgSQL support is in beta
 AWS supports PgSQL, MSSQL, Oracle, MySQL, and their own Aurora
 Google’s Focus is more on NoSQL, while AWS is playing nice with
RDBMS segment also
 Redshift of AWS is similar category offering of Google’s BigQuery
NoSQL
 Max Size of a record is 100 MB in Bigtable vs 400KB in DynamoDB
 Dynamo DB support secondary indexes while bigtable does not
 Cloud Datastore is the NoSQL offering
Bigdata
 BigQuery : No need to provision anything, just import your data and
start query and pay only for storage and for your queries
 Cloud TPU, First AI neural network chip for machine learning in market
by Google only available for Google Cloud users, they are not going to
sell this chip in market. It’s a new hardware rent service which is
about to be become a reality in near future. AWS is still trying to
play with softwares and services only.
 Google Cloud speech with a strong backend support from Tensorflow is
a powerful tools which you can use through API, AWS lack this kind of
service as of now
Analytics
 Dataproc : 90 second lead time
 EMR : 15 minutes
 Google fully managed
 AWS few weeks back enabled Cloud Trails logging for everyone without
any extra cost, Google cloud is using stackdriver logging
Application
 Two types of App Engine in Google, standard and Flexible
 AWS beanstalk
 Containers with Google are kubernetes based
 App Engine standard file system is not writeable and only few
languages are supported
Management
 Bastion Server in Cloud, Always available in your browser
 SNS only support Push notifications, Pub/Sub support push and pull
 SNS : 10, 000 Limit
 Pubsub : 10 MB , SNS : 256 KB
 As of now Google’s downtime is usually higher than AWS
Pricing
 Per Minute pricing vs per hour billing
 Sustained Usage discount in Google
 With AWS, you can sell your extra reserved resources at
market place
 Google is cheaper than Amazon in many categories
 You can purchase bulk memory and CPU on Google and then
divide accordingly into separate machines
 Google has a full 300 USD free account while AWS has free
tier machine type and other services
Energy
Summary
 Google is good at pricing, specially if you are experimenting
 AWS is having more number of data centres than Google
 Google has focus on bigdata and analytics
 AWS has focus on retail customer and traditional webhosts.
 Google is productising what they are using, it’s a major benefit
 AWS is launching new products for almost every area of usage. Devops is taking
centre stage in AWS while Google is little behind in this.
 Container management at Google is superior than AWS

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Hello Everyone, This is Zareef Ahmed, your host for today webinar. In this webinar, we are going to cover 10 differences between Aws and Google Cloud. Both of these are market leaders. So lets start.
  • #3: In the start, I would like to quote, CEO of Vmware, Pual Martiz. He said, Cloud is about how you do computing, not where you do computing. That is right. Cloud is more about your application structure. Your deployment plan and your after deployment services. In this webinar, I will try my best to be neutral, which is difficult, specially, if you have worked with both AWS and Google Cloud a lot. In this talk, I am only giving information on how some of the common features are different from each other. Both of these products of respective companies are ever evolving. So many things may change in future. I have created these slides in month of August 2017. So, if you are going through the recording of this session in future, please keep this mind and refer to official documentation for latest information. As of today, I have tried my best to cover things which has been added to these platform just few weeks back only. So, lets start this journey.
  • #4: Oh, My introduction slide, lets cover it quickly. I am Zareef Ahmed, I am a writer , yes a writer, who can write softwares and programs. I also write blogs and articles in different kind of media. To write my programs and software's along with my articles and blogs, I am using Java, Python, PHP and other programming languages on different kind of platforms. I do write my blogs and articles in English and Hindi. I am doing these activities to do my work on bigdata, Devops, analytics and application development on different kind of cloud platforms, be it public or private . I write my blogs on technology. IN the bottom, there is my linked profile link, please connect.
  • #5: Lets set the background, why we are doing presentation, what are the major goals.
  • #6: Who is the target audience? If you know either Aws or Google then you can use this short webinar as your starting pad to understand other side of spectrum. If you are new to both aws and Google cloud, then you may face some difficulties in understanding lots of keywords in these slides. I suggest using a notepad to make your notes and please do some secondary level of readings after this webinar. It will be useful for you.
  • #7: Her is our agenda for this webinar, We will start very few basic points in the history of aws and google cloud, and then we will move to these 10 different categories. We will be covering 3-4 points in each category, so roughtly we are going to cover around 30-40 points in this session. It means it is going to be really faster one. In the end, I will do summarization of our webinar.
  • #8: AWS was started in 2006. after 2 years they started EBS storage and in the same year, in month of October, they removed beta tag from their services and become fully production ready service. On the other hand, Google become production ready in their compute engine category in the year of 2013 only. Although their app engine was around since last many years, but it was fully managed service, you was not able to do lift and shit of your application on app engine. It was not a infrastructure service. So you can see that Google is behind AWS by roughly 5 years. In these 5 years, Amazon has become market leader with hugh market share…. And other providers are only trying to catch with it.
  • #9: Here is our first category. compute
  • #13: Amazon started as IAAS while Google started as PAAS
  • #19: Renewable energy By end of 2017, they are trying to be 100% renewable energy users.
